BUTTE (AP) — Girls and adults put off by clothes that reveal preteen bellies and other flesh have organized a fashion show with the message that apparel need not be saucy to be cool.

‘‘What mother wants her daughter in the clothing they expect young girls to wear these days?'' asked Denise Harrington, a leader of Apostolic Cristi Girls Club here. ‘‘Who even wants to wear some of that as an adult?''

The Pure Fashion Modesty Style Show is scheduled today at Butte's historic Copper King Mansion. Organizers said it would feature clothes, from local merchants, that are neither sexy nor stodgy.

‘‘We just want to show the girls and their parents that there are options,'' Harrington said.

Eleven-year-old Catherine Harrington said sales clerks often push the more revealing items, saying they are the latest fashion.

‘‘I just don't like wearing that stuff,'' she said of low-rise jeans, midriff-baring shirts and super-tight items. ‘‘It makes me feel like I'm not clothed enough.''

Girls in Butte got the fashion-show idea from Ella Gunderson of Redmond, Wash., also a member of Apostolic Cristi Girls Club. Earlier this year, the preteen Gunderson took retailer Nordstrom to task over its selection of clothes for girls.

"Your clerks suggest there is only one look,'' Gunderson wrote Nordstrom executives. ‘‘If that is true, then girls are supposed to walk around half naked.'' The executives replied Nordstrom would try to provide a variety of fashions for youngsters.

The Dillard's department store chain, which operates in Montana, began carrying more conservative styles after a group of Arizona teens submitted a 2002 petition to Dillard's Phoenix division, asking for more modest clothing.

Organizers of the Butte fashion show said money it raises will be used to send girls to a leadership camp.
