Carroll men put on show
By JOSH JORDAN - IR Sports Writer - 01/16/05
The Saints (14-5 overall, 2-2 Frontier) put on a shooting circus, making 61.5 percent of their shots from the field, including a silly 13 of 20 from three point range in their second straight home win.
"We did shoot it," Carroll coach Gary Turcott said, "that's for sure."
Several players could make claim to ring leader of the show. Jeff Hays scored a game-high 21 points and got the Saints off to a fast start with five points in the opening two minutes, and 13 in the first half.
Andy Brown made all eight of his field goal attempts and all four of his free throws for 20 points, while holding Lights' forward Marcus Wilson to 10 points.
But it was Dallas Leslie who put the dazzle in the win. The sophomore guard from Billings scored 19 points, making five of seven three pointers in just 17 minutes of play. Leslie put the game away mid-way through the second half. Carroll led 60-47 with 11:34 left in the game before he shut out the Lights with 14 points over the next 3:31. He had four three pointers in the stretch, and made a runner in the land to boos the Saints to a 79-54 advantage.
"Once you hit two or three it feels like the hoop is as wide as a 10-foot basket," Leslie said. "It seems like you can throw it in from about anywhere."
It was Hays who had the hot hand early. The junior made a driving basket on the baseline for the game's first basket and knocked down a three pointer as the Saints scored the first 10 points of the game.
Northern (10-8, 1-3) came back with a 19-6 run for a 19-16 lead.
The Saints picked up their running game for a basket from Andy Brown before getting consecutive threes from Leslie and Hays to take the lead for good at 24-19.
Carroll guards Kurt Paulson and Sinan Guler continued to push the pace and the Saints slowly built their lead to 45-35 at the break.
Guler had 11 assists in the game, and Paulson added 10, almost doubling the Lights' team total of 13.
The Saints continued to find baskets early in the second half, but Northern got a spark off the bench from Cory Brothers and Rodrick Carter to stay close.
Carter followed a three pointer by Brothers with one of his own, and went inside for a basket among the big men that had Carroll's lead at 60-47.
But there was little the Lights could do after Leslie's streak.
His first three pointer came in transition after a miss by Northern and forced the visitors into a time out.
The fourth one came on the left side and Leslie's hand was still high in the air when the Lights called another time out, facing a 79-54 deficit.
"He did a great job setting up the screens," Turcott said. "And the guys did a great job of setting the screens for him."
Carroll's largest lead came on a three-point play by Hays that made it 86-58 with 4:33 remaining. Turcott emptied his bench with 3:12 left, satisfied with his team's second straight win.
