Carroll women ready for conference tourney play

By TOM STUBER - IR Sports Writer - 03/02/05

As if they haven't proven they're the best team in the Frontier Conference the Carroll College women will set forth in driving home that point tonight in Butte.

The Saints, now 25-6 overall and 12-2 in the Frontier, won the regular season crown outright Saturday with a sluggish 59-55 win over Rocky Mountain College in Billings.

The win made it Carroll's second straight league title and gave them the No. 1 seed in the conference tourney.

"It was just one of those nights shooting-wise," Carroll coach Shawn Nelson said of the Rocky game. "But I'm proud of how we did one of things we've talked about doing all year and that's finding a way to win. It was a great learning experience."

The Saints were bailed out by their bench, including Sophi Forney and her career-best 20 points. They're still ranked No. 17, but have the 13th best winning percentage in the nation.

The close game may very well help Carroll as league tournaments are rarely a walk in the park. The Saints draw Westminster College of Salt Lake City — a team they drubbed 84-41 in their last meeting — tonight at 6 p.m.

"It says a lot about our team that we can have six of our top scorers off and still be capable of winning on the road," Nelson said.

The Carroll coach added that his squad will maintain the status quo in their preparation.

"They have two great players in Shalee Fackrell and Lindsey Huffman," he said. "We'll need to do a good job on those two, but it's more important for us to stop all the others. If Emily Johnson or Angie Layton get going then they have a chance."

Fackrell (22.9 points per game) and Huffman (16.9 ppg) run first and second in individual scoring in the Frontier.

With Carroll's most recent game occurring on Saturday, the Saints haven't had much time to prepare."

"We've only had one day of practice," Nelson said on Tuesday. "We'll just focus on playing fundamentally sound defense here, then go to Butte and shoot around."

Carroll, which has won 12 of its last 13 games, will stay in Butte and enjoy the tournament atmosphere as the back-and-forth grind is more work than it's worth, according to Nelson.

Should Carroll beat Westminster, they will then face either Rocky or MSU-Northern on Friday at 6.

The Saints are led by junior post Emili Woody, who aveages 14.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Fellow junior Andrea Hall, who has been on a five-week hot streak is second on the team in scoring at 13.8, while reserve freshman Jolene Fuzesy knocks down 12.9 per game.

Carroll is still the top 3-point shooting team in the nation and has four players in the top six in the league, by percentage. Fuzesy is hitting on 50 percent of her long-range shots. Junior Carly Syverson has moved into the league lead in assists with 4.65.
