Plastic recycling

The S.A.V.E. Foundation's next plastics recycling week will be June 23-30 at the parking lot of 1100 N. Last Chance Gulch (former National Guard Armory next to the Y.M.C.A.). We will collect type I beverage containers (water, soda bottles) and type II translucent (natural color milk jugs) beverage containers. No lids, and please give a quick rinse. A more extensive guide to plastics recycling can be found at the S.A.V.E. Foundation website savefoundation.org.

S.A.V.E. will also collect print cartridges, cell phones, and a variety of rechargeable batteries, such as those found in cell phones, laptops, and power tools. These items can also be recycled at the Real Food Market every day. Recycle Plastics Week will also be held in September and December.

To celebrate the first effort by Helena to recycle plastics, S.A.V.E. and its supporters will sponsor a free concert at Bert & Ernie's Thursday, June 30, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., featuring Jason DeShaw. Your patronage will benefit S.A.V.E.'s recycling programs. Make country music, plastics recycling, and the Savemobile part of your summer's activities.

Save entire track

In 2001, Bullock, Smith and Partners, the top fairgrounds planning company in the nation, was hired by the county commission to prepare a new design for the 160-acre county fairgrounds. When completed the plan was enthusastically accepted by the commission.

That's why I find it very hard to understand why the commission has set the Bullock plan aside and is instead backing the over $6 million "footprint" design. If the county commission will take another look at Bullock they can:

Save the entire track.

Leave the rodeo arena where it is and save the cost of moving and rebuilding the facility.

Reject the Bullock plan to demolish the West barn and instead repair it for an estimated $180,000.

Utilize the Bullock — Option A — plan at $4.5 million (needing adjustment for inflation) and hopefully come in close to the $5.7 million mill levy. (Bullock — Option B — was for $9 million and provided for a much larger multi-purpose building addition and new exhibit hall.)

Adopt a traffic plan that will NOT route vehicles to and from the front gate to the back race track parking lot which is part of the "footprint" plan.
