A cold wind blew in from the north in the form of the MSU-Northern volleyball team last night as the Lights dropped Carroll College 28-30, 30-26, 34-32 and 30-27 Saturday night.

“We have things we need to work,” Carroll coach Mo Boyle said. “That’s the bottom line and that’s the key to winning.”

Boyle saw her team drop its second straight home game, but this one was a little tougher to take as the Saints saw big leads in both the second, third and fourth games fritter away.

“(Northern) knew we were having a rough night and they wanted it more than we did,” Boyle said.

Carroll looked solid in the first game as the hard hitting of Tiffany Rochelle and a string of four unforced errors propelled the Saints. Rochelle had three kills down the stretch.

But the Saints had a series of unforced errors late in the second game and Northern got back in control. Things began to snowball from there.

“(The mental aspects) are the things we’ve got to work on,” Boyle said. “We can’t let those kinds of things get to us.”

Northern went from a 24-20 deficit to a 29-24 lead as Ashley Roth had an effective series of serves. A kill by Christie Tyrrell and block by Laurie Chambers and Natalie Solomon prolonged the game, but Jasmine Mitchell of Winnipeg spiked the ball down hard to finish the game and tie the match.

Game three was especially rough for Carroll.

The Saints built a 19-8 lead only to see it vanish in short order. With Jordan Fox serving the Lights scored 14 of the next 15 points to seize the lead at 22-20.

Carroll hung tough and had several chance to win it in the end and in overtime only to see the Lights sneak away with it and a 2-1 lead in games.

The Lights were down 9-5 in the fourth game, but seemed destined to come back again. With Mitchell and Hope Wirll leading the way they did just that. The two came up with nine kills to seal the deal.
