Fuzesy named Frontier player of the week

DILLON (AP) — Athletes from Montana State-Northern and Carroll College are the Frontier Conference basketball players of the week.

Jordan Matthews, a 6-foot-4 senior guard from Salt Lake City, averaged 16.6 points a game in Northern’s three wins at the Kings University Hoopfest. Northern won the tournament, beating Concordia University College, Kings University and the University of Alberta. Matthews shot 60 percent from the field, including 10-of-14 3-pointers.

Carroll College sophomore Jolene Fuzesy won the women’s honor, after scoring 26 points in Carroll’s 93-43 season-opening win over Thompson Rivers University. Fuzesy, a 5-10 guard from Malta, hit 8-of-11 shots from 3-point range.

Talmage injured back in loss to Eagles

MISSOULA (AP) — Jon Talmage, Montana’s leading wide receiver, suffered a deep bruise to his back in Saturday’s 34-20 loss to Eastern Washington, he said.

Talmage didn’t return after being tackled hard on a 5-yard reception late in the first half, his only catch of the game.

‘‘It’s not as bad as we thought,’’ said Talmage, who was unsure how long he’d be out.

MSU basketball to hold scrimmages

BOZEMAN (AP) — Montana State basketball fans can preview the Bobcat men’s and women’s teams on Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Bobcat Basketball Bash in Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.

The men’s and women’s team will participate in scrimmages and 3-point shootouts, as well as sign autographs. The event begins at 2 p.m.

Mets reliever Heredia suspended for steroids

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mets reliever Felix Heredia was suspended for the first 10 days of next season for violating baseball’s steroids policy.

Heredia became the 11th major league player suspended for steroids. The announcement came Tuesday.

Traded from the Yankees to the Mets during the offseason, Heredia appeared in only three games before going on the disabled list in April with a strained left thumb. Doctors then found an aneurysm in his left shoulder after he began having circulation problems and he missed the rest of the season following surgery.

Heredia is 28-19 with six saves in 511 career games — all but two in relief.
