Lewis and Clark County commissioners OK’d a five-year tax holiday for the owners of Riley’s Pub.

The pub opened on Sixth Avenue downtown this fall.

Jim Wolf of Doral Management Limited requested the abatement, which will cost the city, county and schools $1,854 in future property taxes.

Tax abatements are allowed for renovations over $100,000 that increase a property value by more than 2.5 percent, according to Debra LaFountaine of the City of Helena Community Development Department.

Commission Chairman Ed Tinsley said he wanted a “clawback clause” included, if possible. It was unclear if such a clause — which requires repayment of forgiven taxes if a property owner violates the terms of the deal — applies.

Helena city commissioners will likely consider the holiday at a future meeting.

In comparison, Wolf’s request is a modest one.

In September, county and East Helena officials approved a $229,764 tax break for American Chemet, after that company completed a $4.4 million expansion.
