Robert Fairfax McCarthy

Robert Fairfax McCarthy, 79, formerly of Helena, passed away on Jan. 4 at Mayo Hospital in Arizona. He was born in Helena on Dec. 1, 1926, to Fairfax and Madalen McCarthy.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Julia, one sister and her husband, Sheila and Pat Gravage of Billings, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Joan Young, and brother, Donald McCarthy.

Bob graduated from Broadwater High School and attended Montana State University, where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was employed by the Fire Association of Philadelphia, stationed in San Francisco, then transferred to Denver and Helena where he retired. Bob served during World War II in the Army Air Corps.

He was an avid fly fisherman and enjoyed golfing and hunting.

A rosary will be said at Resurrection Parish, Bozeman, on Friday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. A mass will be said at Resurrection Parish on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Townsend.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929; National Foundation for Cancer Research, PO Box 96024, Washington, D.C. 20090-6024; or the charity of donor’s choice.
