Commission votes to retain local management at MetraPark

By The Associated Press - 03/15/06

BILLINGS (AP) — Yellowstone County commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to keep MetraPark management in the hands of county employees rather than hiring a private management firm.

However, commissioners say they’ll continue to monitor the facility’s finances for the next year.

The commission has been exploring management options at the entertainment venue for nearly a year, because of poor financial performance and a long list of capital projects. In February, MetraPark reported a $190,000 deficit due to sluggish ticket sales for a couple of big events.

Commissioner Jim Reno made the motion Tuesday to retain local management. He said he’s heard good things about Bill Dutcher, who was named MetraPark’s interim general manager after former Bob Wagoner resigned from the position in December. Wagoner is now general manager of the North Dakota Fair Association.

Commissioners are planning a daylong retreat March 29 to discuss MetraPark’s future and to consider recommendations from a consultant.

In a report to the commission, consultant Ray Ward recommended hiring staff to book more events and building a dirt-floor arena geared toward horse shows and other agriculture-related events.
