LIVINGSTON (AP) — A 16-year-old Park High School student was suspended and faces charges after shooting another student with a BB gun in the school’s parking lot, Livingston Police Chief Darren Raney said.

The incident happened Wednesday after school, he said.

A subsequent investigation discovered the student also had a high-powered hunting rifle and alcohol in his vehicle, Raney said.

Authorities said the student was a junior but did not release his name.

‘‘It is our understanding the suspect was shooting a BB gun toward friends, joking around,’’ Raney said. ‘‘He was not intoxicated.’’

The student hit another male student in the buttock with one or two BBs, Raney said. The student who was shot chose not to press charges, he said.

Last month, another male Park High student was expelled for a year for bringing handguns to the school. Superintendent Hannibal Anderson has said that student, whose name was not released, admitted bringing firearms to school in the past.

Raney said the student responsible for Wednesday’s incident was referred to a juvenile probation officer and charged with criminal endangerment, possession of a weapon on school property and minor in possession of alcohol.

School officials said the student has been suspended and will face an expulsionary hearing by the school board within the next 10 days.

A school district bus driver, who was picking up students in front of the school, reported the BB gun shooting to police.

Park High Principal Eric Messerli said the student told him he had the rifle in his truck because he planned to go hunting after school.

‘‘He thought he wasn’t doing anything wrong by having a gun in his truck, as he didn’t take it into the school,’’ Messerli said.

Messerli said the student told him he and the student he allegedly hit with BBs had shot BB guns at each other before, but not on school property.
