Acura TL series reunites with a recognizable face for 2007

For 2007, Acura brings back the high-performing version of its midsize sedan, the TL Type-S. The entire TL sedan lineup gets several interior and exterior enhancements.
The re-introduced TL Type-S (on hiatus for three years) enters 2007 sporting very hot wheels. The exclusive 10-spoke alloy wheels in Dark Euro Silver, with the beauty of the large ventilated Brembo brakes showing through, are in my opinion the best exterior element on the TL. The aggressive Type-S also has black chrome trim. The 2007 TL gets a larger grille, new headlight assembly and redesigned bumper.
The 2007 Type-S version of this midsize sedan is powered by a high performing engine, a 24-valve, single overhead cam, 3.5-liter V-6. Acura says this is a modified version of the 3.5 V-6 engine that is on the automaker’s flagship RL sedan.
The TL Type-S produces a hearty 286 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 256 lbs.-ft. of torque at 5,000 rpm. The standard transmission on this front-wheel drive sedan is a new five-speed automatic transmission, featuring Formula-1 style paddle shifters on the steering wheel spokes. My tester was equipped with the automatic transmission; however, being a driver who prefers manuals, I would have preferred the optional six-speed manual on the Type-S. I’m told this close-ratio six-speed has short, smooth-shifting throws with a nice clutch feel for smooth, linear engagement.
Unlike the TL Type-S, the base model TL is not offered with a manual transmission. The TL features a five-speed automatic mated to a 3.2-liter V-6. Base priced at $33,625, the 3.2 TL generates 258 horsepower and 233 lbs.-ft. of torque.
My tester was rated to achieve 20 miles per gallon city and 29 mpg on the highway. The base price on the TL Type-S is $38,125. The luxury sedan is well equipped at this price point. What separates this midsize sedan from other luxury vehicles is the level of high-tech equipment that is particularly suited for cutting-edge technology-oriented drivers who need to have the latest gadgets for rapid information and multi-tasking. Modern innovations include on-the-spot traffic information, hands-free phoning and a sophisticated audio system. Standard on the equipment list is XM satellite radio, a new MP3 player jack, and an eight-speaker, six-disc CD, DVD sound system. The Acura HandsFreeLink allows the driver to use voice command cellphone dialing and a new high-resolution display center provides an array of data, including the car’s maintenance needs. The optional navigation system has a large 8-inch screen with satellite communication for Real-Time Traffic flow information.
Acura uses two distinct interior lighting and trim configurations for the TL and the performance-oriented Type-S. The TL utilizes blue ambient lighting and wood trim.
The Type-S is distinguished by red ambient lighting and carbon fiber trim. In addition, this sporty model has more highly bolstered front seats, stainless steel foot pedals, and contrast stitching on the seats, steering wheels and door panels that emphasize the car’s sporty nature.
Safety technology that is standard on both TL models are side curtain airbags, side-impact and dual front passenger airbags, as well as active safety systems.
, such as Vehicle Stability Assist, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist.
The TL has a six-year/70,000-mile powertrain and a four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.
