Most say: Reject federal ID

By IR Staff - 02/05/07

Last week's Question of the Week was whether Montana should reject the federal Real ID Act of 2005, which requires states to issue driver's licenses that meet certain standards, such as verifying citizenship. Two thirds of those responding said the state should do just that. (Last week the House voted nearly unanimously to reject the federal requirement.)

Among 243 votes in this unscientific poll, 163 said it should be rejected, while 80 disagreed.

Some readers' comments:

n Yes. It's a total waste of money and it's about time for the American people to take back control from the "Decider" and his minions. The Real ID card is just another asinine idea created by the attorney general and the Justice Department who are trying busily to build an American version of the Gestapo. Having this card will be just one more way for somebody to steal your identity, since all the personal information which will be collected won't be protected anyway. And most say the government will have even greater control of our lives.

n Yes! Please reject the federal Real ID Act. We don't want a police state. We want our privacy.

n I do indeed think that we should reject the federal Real ID Act as it is unconstitutional and rejects states' sovereignty. It is a complete violation in the civil rights and I am glad that both a Democrat and a Republican can see this.

n Those who don't reject this act should study the history of the Nazi takeover of Germany in the 1930s to understand what is happening under the Bush administration.
