After 13 years of being denied, the University of Montana Lady Griz basketball team finally cracked the Associated Press’ Top 25 ranking, it was announced Monday.

Montana (27-2) made the Top 25 for the first time since it was 17th in the final poll of the 1993-94 season.

The Lady Griz won their 13th regular-season Big Sky championship and 20th league title overall in coach Robin Selvig’s 29 seasons. They’ll take an 11-game winning streak into the conference tournament beginning with a game Friday versus the lowest remaining seed.

‘‘It’s an honor for us to crack the Top 25,’’ said Selvig, who’s 672-190 with the Lady Griz. ‘‘This young team has had a phenomenal year. It’s great recognition for us, but also for the Big Sky Conference.’’

The announcement came after the Big Sky Conference announced that three Lady Griz players were given all-conference honors.

Sophomore guard Mandy Morales was named the league MVP and first team all-conference for her contribution to the team. Morales leads Montana with a 20.1 scoring average and has 6.8 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game. Her scoring average ranked second in the league and 14th nationally, while she led the league and ranked fourth nationally in assists.

After breaking a league record by being recognized with six Big Sky Conference Player of the Week, Morales is one of 11 finalists for the 2007 Nancy Lieberman Award, which recognizes the nation’s top point guard. It was her second season being recognized as first team all-Big Sky.

Sonya Rogers and Britney Lohman were the other teammates to be recognized by the conference.

Both were named to the second team all-Big Sky.

Rogers, a one-time Big Sky Player of the Week, was second behind Morales on the team in scoring at 11.4 points per game. She also ranked second behind Morales in both 3-point field goals (41) and assists (52) and placed sixth in the Big Sky in 3-point field goal percentage (.387) and seventh in field goal percentage (.471).

Lohman was Montana’s No. 3 scorer, averaging 9.8 points per game, and finished third in rebounding at 5.6 boards per game. She led the team in shooting (.549) and 3-point field goal percentage (.525). Lohman averaged 11.6 points per game in league play.

She becomes Montana’s 11th Big Sky MVP, joining Lisa McLeod (’89), Jeanne McNulty (’90), Shannon Cate (’91 and ’92), Ann Lake (’93), Greta Koss (’96), Skyla Sisco (’98), Linda Weyler (’00), Brooklynn Lorenzen (’04) and Hollie Tyler (’05).

“We’ve had a pretty special year so far, and it’s nice to see the ladies get some individual honors,” Selvig said. “It’s obviously a team thing to go 15-1, but to do that, someone on your team is doing something, and I think the coaches around the league recognized that.”

Junior Johanna Closson, who averaged 9.6 points and a team-best 6.6 rebounds per game, was named honorable mention.
