Helena high school rodeo: Hanson wins at breakaway roping
By TOM STUBER, IR Sports Writer - 04/02/07
Hanson thrilled a crowd of about 1,000 spectators at the multi-purpose facility with a winning run in the breakaway roping of 3.21 seconds.
Hanson’s effort was good, but nothing like the day eventual two-day all-around winner Jessica Picchietti of Arlee had.
Picchietti won two events — the pole bending in 20.93 seconds and the goat tying in 7.77 seconds. She also placed third in the barrel racing in 13.34 seconds.
Picchietti, who tallied 63 points, was joined in the all-around circle by Ronan’s Levi Guenzler, who scored 40 points in two days.
Guenzler had a workman-like day on Sunday. He placed second in the team roping with partner Shane McCaffree, third in the steer wrestling and fifth in the calf roping. Rachel Thomson won the barrels with a 13.22-second run. She just nipped Helena’s Annie Novotny, who was looking to sweep both days in the event. Novotny was just .02-seconds behind.
Browning cowboys continued to dominate the rough stock events, winning all three for the second straight day.
Tuck Johnson won the bull riding with a 79, Chazz Racine won the saddle bronc with a 76 and A.J.
St. Goddard won the bareback with a 77.
Helena’s Michael Miller took second in the bareback with a 74-point ride.
Johnson joined Picchietti as a double-winner. He also took home the steer wrestling title with a 5.82-second run.
Kody Lahaye and Nate Eichhorn won the team roping in 9.15 seconds.
The high school circuit continues next week in Billings as contestants continue to jockey for position at the state high school finals rodeo in Missoula in June.
