Museum of Rockies marks 50th anniversary Saturday

BOZEMAN — The Museum of the Rockies is celebrating its 50th Anniversary on Saturday with free admission to the public plus cake, ice cream, live music, and balloons.

If you were born or married in 1957, the museum would like to honor you as well. Simply let the front desk know when you arrive for the celebration.

The museum and the Taylor Planetarium will be free to the public this day so bring your friends and family. Among the exhibits currently on display are Tutankhamun: “Wonderful Things” from the Pharaoh’s Tomb a dazzling collection of 126 reproductions that faithfully preserves Tutankhamun’s treasures; Picasso: 25 Years of Edition Ceramics a beautiful selection of 65 ceramic works created by Pablo Picasso in collaboration with the artisans at the Madoura pottery workshop in Southern France, between the years 1947 and 1971; and the Museum of the Rockies 50th Anniversary Exhibit tracing the museum’s history from its foundations in a couple of Quonset huts on the MSU campus to the world-class institution we enjoy today.

The museum hours on Saturday are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be gallery talks on the museum’s 50th anniversary exhibit at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Free cake and ice cream will be served from 1-2:30 p.m. and the Gallatin County Junior Fiddlers will perform from 1-2 p.m. Winners of the museum’s 50th anniversary poster contest will be announced at 2 p.m. For more information call 994-2251.
