Bronze Star for Helena soldier

By IR Staff 10/26/07

Thumbs up to 1st Sgt. Monte Herrin of Helena, a member of the Montana National Guard who received a Bronze Star for Meritorious Achievement at a ceremony at Fort Harrison last week.

Herrin was honored for his work in Iraq recovering and repairing battle-damaged combat vehicles, often under enemy fire.

Thumbs up to Jason Rigsby of the Helena Fire Department for being named Firefighter of the Year by the Exchange Club of Helena. He was nominated by Battalion Chief Brad Hampton because of his attitude and the way he is able to motivate the rest of his crew.

Thumbs down to rates of pay so low at the Montana State Crime Laboratory in Missoula that practically all the staff went elsewhere in recent years, leaving the agency too understaffed to handle its duties. The situation left Lewis and Clark County to foot the bill for tens of thousands of dollars worth of out-of-state lab work.

Thumbs up to the news that trout have returned to parts of Silver Bow Creek, for more than 100 years the poster child for streams killed by mining pollution. It’s a hopeful indication that reclamation efforts are working.

" Why do the pro-gun folks keep beating the dead horse of wanting to allow so-called "sharpshooters" into the city limits at night. That was such a crazy idea that I, for one, am glad the FWP Commission put an end to it. I wish these prissy folks who don't like the deer eating their fancy rose bushes can move on. Deer are herbivorous creatures and are not going to drag a 3-year-old into the wood for dinner. Get over it already. "

" To Pat Tucker and I quote: "Suicide or Self-murder, is the act of intentionally terminating one's own life. Suicide occurs for a number of reasons such as depression, substance abuse, shame, AVOIDING PAIN, financial difficulties or other undesirable fates." Ending your own life for any reason is suicide. " The taking of one's own life is suicide no matter what the circumstance are. However, under the circumstance of terminal illness and when death is going to be the out come, I believe that everyone should be given the choice to take their own life. Many resort to this after long periods of suffering. I believe that it has to be left to the individual and not the courts! Miss.Angelwatching "

" I would like to than Nicole Gray for pointing out in her letter that males also can be victims of Domestic Violence. I am still recovering from the physical and emotional affects now four years later. "
