Palmer playing well for Macalester

Ryan Palmer is a senior goal keeper for the Macalester College soccer team. Palmer helped the Scots to an 8-6-4 overall record, and a fifth-place tie in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Macalester was 5-4-1 in conference play.

The Scots missed qualifying for an MIAC playoff berth by just one point.

Palmer was selected as a 2007 All-Conference goalie.

“A four-year starter in goal, Palmer closed out his career with another standout campaign, posting four MIAC shutouts and an overall 0.98 goals against average,” according to the Macalester web site. “He ranked second in the league in saves (66 in 10 MIAC matches), third in save percentage (.880) and fourth in goals against average (0.87). In his four seasons as starter, Palmer posted a 26-19-4 record, 17 shutouts and a 1.06 GAA in 53 games.”

A Capital High alum, Palmer was a two-time all-state soccer selection. As a sophomore, he was the keeper for the Bruins’ 2001 Class AA state championship. In 2003, Palmer was chosen as the Montana Gatorade Player of the Year, in addition to being named a first team NSCAA High School All-American.

He earned a total of four letters at CHS n three in soccer and one in basketball.

Palmer’s younger brother, Devin, lettered as a freshman this year with the state runner-up Bruins, and was the only frosh to score a goal this season.

Ryan was recently picked as the Player’s Player by his Mac teammates. The award goes annually to the team’s most valuable player and the recipient of the Volker Dohmer trophy. The college web site states that the Scots’ All-MIAC goalie posted four shutouts in 11 league starts, versus St. Olaf, Bethel, Concordia and St. Mary’s, while permitting just 12 goals in 12 games. He blocked 75 shots on goal.

Palmer will graduate from Macalester next spring with two degrees, in cognitive neuroscience and psychology. Ryan’s parents are Tom and Teri Palmer.
