Most liked voting by mail

By the Independent Record - 11/19/07

Last week’s Question of the Week asked whether readers would like to vote by mail in every election, as city voters did this fall. Two out of three said they would. Among 448 responses to this unscientific poll, 300 favored mail voting, while 148 did not. Some readers’ comments:

-- Yes. That would be the best 41-cent investment of the year.

-- No. It is too impersonal.

-- Voting by mail creates a greater opportunity for voter fraud. Voters should be required to show a picture ID when they vote to ensure you are whom you claim to be before being allowed to cast a vote. During the 2004 governor’s race in Washington state, Seattle/King County had 5,000 more ballots cast than they had registered voters. We don’t need that kind of voter fraud.

-- I believe the outcome of elections would be entirely different.

-- I think voting by mail (absentee) is a good option for people. However, I prefer having a place to go to cast my vote. It’s not an inconvenience, it’s an American tradition to get out and vote.

-- You bet! Voting by mail is so much easier than having to stand in line to get into a voting booth. And it is obvious that mail voting improves turnout, which has to be a good thing.
