Helena gets a dose of health

Eliza Wiley IR Photo Editor - Instructors and trainers from the Broadwater Athletic Clubs demonstrate one of their drumming classes for a packed Civic Center ballroom during the 2008 Health and Wellness Fair.
Kazmierowski, who is expecting her second child soon, said she had just been dreaming she could have another ultrasound before her daughter was born.
And to her surprise, the fair gave her the chance to do just that, as Health Sound Imaging was on hand demonstrating its 3D/4D ultrasound equipment.
“I got to meet her a week and a half early. I know she has hair,” Kazmierowski said, adding that her 4-year-old son didn’t have much hair when he was born.
Kazmierowski was among hundreds of health-conscious Helenans who braved the cold and snow Tuesday to visit the event at the Civic Center.
She said she was mainly interested in the baby-related offerings, and she especially enjoyed all the booths that gave demonstrations of their equipment, such as the ultrasound clinic. “It’s better than just getting a brochure,” she said.
Other popular attractions at the fair included the various free health screenings offered. Helena Physicians Clinic was on hand giving bone-density tests and breast cancer risk screenings, Quantum Biofeedback Specialists gave biofeedback demonstrations, St. Peter’s Hospital gave lung-function tests, and several booths offered blood-pressure screenings.
Free chair massages from Robyn Lund Massage and Intuitive Phoenix Massage also were a hit.
“I think it’s been great,” said Esther Fuehrer. “I loved my massage, and I’m above average on my bone density,” she added with a smile.
Debbie Peterson, from Helena Physicians Clinic said about a third of the people that received bone-density tests were found to be at risk for osteoporosis.
Also popular were the various chiropractic offices that were demonstrating equipment and services.
Anna Nash, from Nash Spine Rehabilitation, demonstrated various stretching techniques she said people can use to prevent flare-ups of pain.
Nash showed extension exercises for the back, flexion exercises for the back, cervical exercises to help prevent headaches, stretches people can do in the office and at home.
“You can save a lot of money, and avoid pain and suffering by doing some very simple exercises,” Nash said.
“I think it’s awesome,” said Lucinda Leon, adding that she comes to the fair every year. “I found out about a lot of services in the community that I didn’t know about. I just like to come and check everything out.”
