A Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy reportedly shot and killed a man following a confrontation in Boulder early Saturday morning.

According to a statement from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s department, a Boulder city police officer responded to a call about a suicidal man at about 3 a.m. and found the man, identified as Francis Michael Stately, wielding a shotgun.

Stately, 31, reportedly threatened the officer and fired the shotgun.

When Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies arrived, Stately pointed the shotgun at Deputy Dave Kosola, who fired his weapon, wounding Stately, according to the statement.

Officers at the scene provided medical attention to Stately, who was taken to St. Peter’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, the statement said.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has requested that the State Division of Criminal Investigations help in the investigation of the incident. The Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Department also is involved with the investigation.

Lewis and Clark County Coroner Mickey Nelson will be the coroner in the case. Kosola has been placed on administrative leave during the course of the investigation.

" As a long time friend and family member of Francis(Saul)Stately, I believe that excessive force was used in subdueing him. Saul was the nicest and easiest going individuals I have ever had the priveledge of knowing. He was cut short in his time here with us. Directly the result of Dave Kosola of the Jefferson county Sheriff office. And I hold the sheriff deputy personally responsible for this incident.
He will always be remembered as a father, friend, and loved family
member.
I believe that news stories such as these should have both sides of the story and not just that of the sheriffs department. "
