RMDC program offers friendships to help heal mentally ill adults
By IR Staff - 01/15/08
Compeer is an international program that matches those in recovery from mental illness with a volunteer from the community.
The program is designed much like Big Brothers Big Sisters, according to Les Clark, the program’s director. Volunteers can choose from a list of people to be matched with based on shared interests.
Volunteers are asked spend four hours or more a month with their matches, with a one-year commitment.
The program is for people who are in recovery from serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression or anxiety disorder who are not a danger to others. Patients must referred to the program by a therapist or social worker.
The program is for adults 18 and older. There are also plans for expanding the program to adolescents. Clark said RMDC hopes to have that in place in the next six months. Clark said several volunteers are in place, but more will be needed. To volunteer, call Clark at 442-1236 and follow the menu.
