Always a bridesmaid, finally a bride

By Brent Northup - 01/24/08

Jane has a closet full of bridesmaid dresses. She must have lots of close friends of the marrying kind, right?

Well, a few, yes. But Jane has discovered other clever ways to get invited. She’s not a wedding crasher, exactly, but she’s not afraid to play every card in the books to get on the guest list.

Jane so likes weddings, that she’s fashioned an amateur career planning weddings. One way or another, Jane finds a way to slip into the row of bridesmaids.

That cute gimmick grows old quickly in “27 Dresses,” but the film does offer a mildly satisfying, if formulaic, tale of a lonely, single girl finally finding love. And, of course, she finds it where she wasn’t looking.

There are two subplots of interest. One finds Jane falling in love with her boss, only to watch as her blonde bombshell sister tries to steal him away. The sibling squabble entertains for a while.

And then there’s the cynical wedding writer (James Marsden) for a local paper who makes his living attending weddings and writing Harlequin-style stories of the occasions. He happens upon Jane and finds her irresistible. Edit that: He finds her bridesmaid life an irresistible story.

All these strands end up being tied together as messily as wedding cake on the groom’s face.

Kathryn Heigl, whose movie career began with “Knocked Up,” carries the film nicely as a sweet, lonely girl who loves weddings. Her best friend Casey (Judy Greer) provides lots of cynical sidekick humor. The ditzy, sexy sister is a stereotype from start to finish. The men seem a touch vapid — but are uniformly handsome.

“27 Dresses” is a lazy chick flick that is no more original than any of the weddings in Jane’s life. One of the standing jokes in the movie is that every expensive wedding dress “can be shortened and worn again.”

“27 Dresses” looks and feels like it’s a wedding dress that has been worn before.
