Carroll football signs 7 more

Carroll College head football coach Mike Van Diest announced seven more signings to the Saints’ NAIA program on Tuesday.

One NCAA Division I transfer and six high school recruits will be joining the Carroll squad that went 15-0 during the 2007 season en route to their fifth NAIA national title in six years.

The Saints got a head start on the recruiting season, nabbing the players one day before the NCAA Division I’s official Signing Day.

The recruits are:

1. Pete Richter, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound wide receiver who transfers from Idaho State. Richter was an all-state receiver at Timberline High School in Boise, Idaho, the same school that produced former all-American linebacker Marcus Atkinson of the Saints. Richter will have three years of eligibility left.

2. Dane Broadhead, a 6-2, 210-pound quarterback from Minico High School in Rupert, Idaho. Dane was a four-year starter who threw for 6,523 years. He was 422-for-785 with 60 touchdowns. His senior year he rushed for 422 yards with 5 TDs. He was selected as the Great Basin Conference Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007. Broadhead is also a three-year letter winner in basketball and four-year letter winner in baseball. He has also made academic all-state. Broadhead was recruited by Idaho State and UM-Western.

3. Joe Dunning, a 6-1, 195-pound linebacker from Billings Senior. Dunning was a first team all-conference and first team all-state linebacker and played for the state AA championship this past fall. He was named the co-defensive MVP for the Eastern AA Conference as well as the Broncos’ defensive MVP. He is a starter on the basketball team and a two year letter winner, as well as lettering in track. Dunning was named to the Great Falls Tribune’s Super State Team as a senior and has been selected to the Mon/Dak All-Star game. He has been academic all-state in his junior and senior year. He was recruited by University of Mary and Rocky Mountain College.

4. Erik Heiss, 6-2, 215-pound threat at both linebacker and runningback, comes from Kelly Walsh High School in Casper, Wyo. Heiss was named first team all-state as a running back in 2006 and 2007. In 2006 he was named the Conference Player of the Year. In 2007 he was named first team all-state as a linebacker as well. He was named to the Casper Star Tribune’s Wyoming Super 25 Team in both seasons. This past season Heiss rushed for 1,084 yards, for a 7.1 average and had seven receptions for 132 yards. He scored 16 touchdowns. He also registered 57 tackles and had one interception on defense. He has lettered in basketball, soccer and swimming. He was voted team captain his senior year and was selected to the Wyoming Shrine Game. Erik was recruited by Chadron State and Sioux Falls.

5. Matt Ritter, a 5-10, 175-pound quarterback and defensive back graduated from Butte Central High School. In 2006 and 2007 Matt was named first team all-conference and first team all-state as a QB and Safety. He was the conference offensive MVP on defense in both his junior and senior year. In 2007 he was named the conference defensive MVP. He is a four-year letterman in football, basketball and track. He has been all-conference in basketball and all-state in track. Ritter has been selected to play in the Mon/Dak All-Star game and the East/West Shine game this summer. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has been academic all-state each year of high school. Ritter was named to the Super State Team by the Great Falls Tribune as a senior and was recruited by the University of Montana and Montana Tech.

6. Colton Schofield is a 6-2, 215-pound linebacker from Coronado High School in Henderson, Nev. As a junior, Schofield was named second team all-Sunrise Southeast Division-Las Vegas. This past year he was named first team all-Sunrise Southeast Division-Las Vegas. He was also named Conference Defensive Player of the Year in the city of Henderson. He was selected team captain and defensive MVP at Coronado in 2007. He will be playing in the annual all-state game this summer. Schofield started at tight end as well in 2007 and has participated in power lifting while in school. His junior year, he set the school record for power cleans. Schofield was recruited by Idaho State and the University of South Dakota as well as the University of Mary.

7. Matt White, a 6-0, 210-pound linebacker from Billings West, lettered as a sophomore and junior at Billings Central before transferring to West High. He started on both sides of the ball his senior year. White was named second team all-conference as a fullback in 2007. He was named first team all-state as an inside linebacker as a senior. White was selected to play in the Mon/Dak All-Star game and the East/West Shrine Game. He is a member of the National Honor Society and is academic all-state. He had 123 total tackles this past season. He was recruited by Montana Tech and Montana State.
