Saints men ready for second half of season, face Northern
By TOM COTTON, Independent Record - 02/07/08
The Saint men are coming off an off weekend and split the two-game set with the Lights and Argos in January.
The loss to MSU-N was a tough one to take. The Saints took a six point lead with two minutes to go, only to see Northern stage an improbable rally to win the game.
“I thought we played well for 38 minutes and they played extremely well for two minutes,” said Carroll College coach Gary Turcott.
In that game, Travis Noble and Delvaughn Tinned combined for 36 points. Tinned averages 20 points per game, while Noble puts in 16 points per contest.
Great Falls has just one conference win to its credit, but they are coming in with a head of steam, winning their last three games. They have been helped by the addition of guard Levi Lopez who became academically eligible in January.
“He is a little jet and a 3-point shooter,” Turcott said.
Lopez has averaged 10 points per game since joining the lineup.
The Argos downed Montana Tech two weeks ago for their first conference win two weeks ago. They swept Walla Walla college last weekend in a two-game series. Corey Brothers burned Walla Walla for 33 points in the first game of the pair.
The Saints have used their break to get healthy and to fine tune their play.
They have dropped three games in a row, the last two coming against conference leaders Westminster and Lewis-Clark State.
Turcott said that his team has worked on getting their motion offense going by setting better screens. They will also try to involve the posts more in their offense.
“Those are things we don’t have a lot of time to work on during the normal week,” he said. “This week we have had more time to work on those things.”
Defensively, he said they will have to cut down on their fouls.
“People have been spreading us out and taking us off the dribble,” he said. “When we play defense, we don’t like to give up that many fouls.”
The contest will tipoff at 8 p.m. It will be Big Brothers and Big Sisters night sponsored by Big Sky Brokers.
