“It’s really all about the defense,” Carroll coach Gary Turcott said.
Carroll, now 5-4 in the Frontier and 17-7 overall, has held its last two opponents to 100 points.
“We’re just playing hard on the defensive end,” he added. “It doesn’t matter who’s in the game they’re all playing hard on defense.”
They weren’t bad offensively either, especially in the second half where the Saints hit on 67 percent of their shots. They also made 12-of-16 free throws in the second 20 minutes.
A 20-6 run early in the second half left UGF little chance of coming back. “The first three minutes of the second half was critical,” Turcott said. “We went from up 14 to up 24 in a matter of minutes.”
Carroll hit three straight 3-pointers — two by Derek Johnson — to start the second half. Later the Saints scored 14 unanswered points to go ahead 65-31.
Turcott also pointed to his team’s second chance opportunities in the first half as a key.
“We weren’t shooting well early, but we had 10 offensive rebounds in the first half or it would’ve been much closer,” he said.
The Saints finished with 12 offensive rebounds.
Carroll had a 19-3 run in the first half to take a 23-8 lead. Former Great Falls High star Josh Saunders, who had a game-high 18 points off the bench, hit a pair of 3-balls to cap off the run.
“In this offense you just take shots when you have the opportunity,” Saunders, who played 21 minutes, said. “I just try to bring energy off the bench. Play defense and get on the boards, then see what happens offensively.”
Six different Saints scored in the first nine minutes. The Argos would get no closer than 12 down from that point.
Carroll had seven players score eight points or more. Chad Vaculin had 11, while Derek Johnson, Eder Zuniga, and Chris Kaschmitter each had 10. Zuniga scored all of his points in the second half after taking just one shot in the first half.
The Saints had a 36-19 edge on the boards and held UGF (7-14, 1-8) to just 4-of-17 on 3-pointers.
Kaschmitter had nine rebounds. No Saints played more than 30 minutes in the game, while all but two players put in eight minutes or more.
“Our emphasis this week was to play defense,” Saunders said. “The defense sets up everything and gets us in transition.”
UGF got a nice game from Cory Brothers who hit on 8-of-16 shots and finished with 18 points. Other than Brothers the Argos made just 12-of-37 shots on the night.
Two nights earlier the Argos scored 101 points in a 102-101 loss to Rocky Mountain College.
Kiethan Gregg added 11 points and three assists.
