A record 186 participants took turns jumping into the ice-cold water of Spring Meadow Lake Saturday, raising $26,600 - about $8,000 more than last year - for Special Olympics Montana.

As shivering plungers warmed up in a nearby hot tub or wrapped themselves in towels, they shared a common refrain - the ice-cold soak was well worth it for a good cause. Money raised at the ninth annual Sweetheart Passion Plunge supports Special Olympians in the Helena area and across Montana.

Thomas Jodoin said a trip to watch the summer games last year inspired him to support Special Olympics.

"It's really good to see people who aren't disappointed with their lot in life … and who are having fun," he said.

"It's just a quick, cold shock and then it's over," said participant Wayne Ternes.

"I've grown up around Special Olympians … and it's just a cool project, it really is," he added.

Dan Mazurek raised $1,000 this year for his second Passion Plunge.

"It's for a good cause," he said. "It might be a little cold, but - I know this is hard to believe - it's a good time."

The event also includes a costume contest. Batman and Robin took an icy dip, and a trio of women dressed as Rockettes proudly said they had participated in the plunge each of the past nine years.

Saturday's event was a partnership among local law-enforcement agencies; staunch supporters of the Special Olympics, they raise additional money through annual torch runs. Several local officers, including Helena Police Chief Troy McGee and Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Cheryl Liedle, jumped into the frigid water.
