Land Trust work days, hikes scheduled

Following is the Prickly Pear Land Trust’s schedule of trail work days, guided hikes and other events for this summer.

Trail work days

May 19: Create a mountain bike skills trail just south of the Old Shooting Range near the DeFord Trail. This could also include connecting the DeFord Trail with the Roger Fuchs Trail.

June 23: Build a new section of trail connecting Crystal Drive to South Hills Drive on the East Side.

July 21: Complete a trail link from Mount Ascension’s east side to Arrowroot Road.

Sept. 8: Complete the Eddye McClure Trail from Hobbes Hill to Arrowroot Road.

Sept. 13: Work on a section of the Continental Divide Trail near Bison Mountain. This project is a partnership of the High Divide Trails Partnership including PPLT, Montana Wilderness Association, Great Divide Cyclery, the Continental Divide Trail Alliance and numerous equestrian, cycling clubs and outdoor groups.

Guided trail walk schedule

May 20: Wildflower Walk — Learn about our wonderful wildflowers on this guided walk of Mount Helena.

June 17: Kids Trail Hike — Take kids along on this hike, custom-made for little legs.

July 15: Geocache Hike — Get a cache-course in

geocaching at the Beattie Street Trailhead.

Aug. 19: Explore New Trails — Get to know the newest additions to the Helena trail system at the Eddye McClure Trailhead.

Trolley to Trails

Trolley to Trails free rides to trailheads along the Mt. Helena Ridge Trail begin May 20 and run through Sept. 10. The rides are free and offered Saturday mornings at 8:00, 8:40, and 9:20 a.m. The trolley picks up riders (and bikes) at the Woman’s Mural on Broadway and Last Chance Gulch. Open Space Fair

The Prickly Pear Land Trust’s second annual Open Space Fair is a great place to explore everything that Helena has to offer. It includes interactive booths, fun for kids, great food and a festive atmosphere. The event takes place in Heritage Park beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, in conjunction with the Don’t Fence Me In trail races.
