Man faces charges for baseball-bat attack
By ANGELA BRANDT - Independent Record - 07/15/08
Shawn Michael Kaestner, who faces a felony charge of assault with a weapon, was gaming when a neighbor came to the door of his Logan Street apartment to retrieve a few borrowed CDs, according to documents filed in Justice Court on Monday.
Kaestner was annoyed that he had to pause his game to answer the door and return the music, the documents state.
The victim told police that when he asked for his CDs back, Kaestner became agitated, returned the discs and then slammed the door, according to court documents.
Words, including a few expletives, were then exchanged between the two men through the door, and Kaestner subsequently reopened the door, this time holding the bat.
Kaestner struck the man in the stomach and then in the head with the bat, causing a large laceration on the victim’s head, the documents allege. The victim fell to the floor and was calling 911 with his cell phone when Kaestner kicked him in the face and then fled, the documents say.
Police responded to the victim’s call at about 8:45 p.m.
Officers found Kaestner outside the apartment building smoking a cigarette and the victim inside his apartment in the same building with blood-soaked towels covering his head, court documents note.
The man was transported to St. Peter’s Hospital for treatment.
Kaestner told police the man was trying to open his door, irritating him further, and when he opened the door to speak with him, the man tried to push his way into the residence.
It was then that Kaestner grabbed the bat and struck the man once in the head, court documents say.
Kaestner was released Monday afternoon after posting $1,000 bond.
