McCain’s sly racism

By Jay Dufrechou, 6275 Elkhorn Road - 08/10/08

For those Montanans considering voting for Senator McCain, I hope you have a chance to see the television ad the McCain campaign started running for the ostensible purpose of suggesting that Obama is nothing but star-power. The ad begins with images of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton (young, white, sexy) and then flashes to Senator Obama. Having grown up in the American South, I knew immediately that the ad was designed to inflame deeply rooted, often unconscious fears in some Americans about black men and white women, to suggest subliminally that we not let Obama become too uppity and keep him in his place — that we keep him as “other.” Shockingly, the ad appeared not long before the McCain campaign accused Senator Obama of playing the “race card” while claiming they were keeping race out of the election! The willingness of some Republicans to exploit racial prejudices for political gain usually angers me. This time tears rolled down my face. Wouldn’t it be something if the state of Montana surprised the country and voted for a man who really wants to bring this country, and the world, together?

" Get a grip ... there is no racism in that ad. Unless of couse you have drank the Obama-Koolaid and then you may be delusional. Jon Stewart had a great analysis of that ad and its "SO-called" racism. Check it out on the web. "

" Typical, blame the other side for nonexistant racism to try to stifile any other opinions but their own. "

" Gosh, I guess I'm not as nuanced (or weepy) as Mr. Dufrechou. Senator McCain's ad compared Senator Obama's hubris-filled campaign to the likes of Britney and Paris - celebrities who are mainly famous for, well, being famous. And when the teleprompter is off, and the hordes aren't being served wurst und brews with their rock concert - that's all that this senator will be.
Let's not forget a few things: 1. Senator Obama is half Caucasian; 2. Senator Obama called his own granny "typically white"; 3. Senator Obama pulled out the race card when he gave the speech which ended with the words, "...By the way, did you know he (Obama) is black?"
Why don't y'all go after Jesse Jackson (D), who wanted to perform surgery on Senator Obama - hmmmmmmmmmmm? "

" Wouldn't it be something if BOTH candidates stopped playing the race card?

I hate to tell you this, but Obama is just as guilty of doing this as he is. If you read that much into that ad....you need more to do. Seriously? Obama was the first to have an ad with those two girls and put himself in the "Celebrity" light. He isn't a celebrity.....he's a man running for the Presidency....hopefully....he will be remembered as well as some of the other losers! "

" Jay;
Which one was your issue? White? Young? Women? If having white women and a black man in the same 30 second ad caused you to automatically think those thoughts, please seek help with your issues. I guess ads with Mr. Obama should only have persons of color in them? Or just old white women? If they were ugly white women, would it have still cause thoughts of racism for you? THAT sounds racist to me. The girls shown are two of the best pop culture examples in the world of people famous ONLY for being famous. Agree with that premise or not--it was the idea of the ad. "

" If you want to believe it is racism, you're welcome to your opinion, but most folks got the "star-power" deal where those depicted are pretty, but shallow and without substance.

I wonder how many young women oh-bum-uh managed to talk out of their nikers, that sweet talking little devil. "
