Obama for good reasons

By Maura Hardy (age 22 and mother of three), 1540 Easy Road - 08/12/08

I resent Bruce Supalla’s letter in which he implied women under 25 who support Obama lack judgement. There is good reason why women of my generation support Sen. Obama. We support the need for change in this country and in the world. Although the older generations may be long gone by the time the full effects of global warming set in, it is the citizens 25 and younger who will feel them first-hand. The saying goes “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” John McCain is an old dog. He is offering the same failed policies that have gotten our country and planet into this mess in the first place. Our generation values recycling and cleaner energy resources. We shop for safer cleaning supplies and fill our sockets with CFLs. We want to move away from our dependency on fossil fuels. We do not lack judgement. We strive for change!

" Thanks, skosena. Glad someone on the other side of the aisle is willing to chime in. In poking around a bit here on some of the recent "most commented" I did come across this one where purple had nice post where he didn't resort to name-calling or vitriol, so he's capable of commenting in a civil manner. (I hope that I'm not being blinded by the fact that I agree with that post. What's next? Cats & dogs living in harmony?)

purple - I'm disappointed that you haven't cared to respond to this. I also have to say I'm now a bit concerned for my own family and their property. "

" May I say that I am usually very conservative in my views and sometimes agree with purples point of view. But the way he says things makes me want to keep my own similar ideas to myself.

Mr purple you are giving those of us that lean to the right a bad name.

I use a ID here on helenair.com that is an obvious reveal of who I am. I think that I should stand behind what I say with my name. I don't ever want to post something that would embarrass my husband or family. And it works. There have been many times that I have hit the delete button because I decide that what I am writing sounds a little to "purple".

I feel bad for you purple because you seem to carry around a lot of hate and anger and I bet life is not very fun with that kind of baggage.

So sir, before my home starts to use your IR ID as a description of a bad attitude ("stop that purple attitude young lady or go to your room." "Son hitting your brother is a very purple thing to do") maybe you should really listen to some of the ideas put forth that your unkindness here on the internet is not helping anyone see issues in the "right" light. You have some valid ideas and points. Maybe sharing them without all the caustic undertones would actually help others hear what you have to say. Just my opinion. "

" purple - I had no idea you had been harassed for your previous letters to the editor. For the record, I find that behavior you described absolutely wrong and inappropriate. My sole intent for inviting you to no longer be anonymous on the helenair.com was to see if you could take ownership and responsibility for the words you post here. Nearly all of your comments have a combative & hostile tone not fit for civil public discourse. Many of your posts are filled with inaccuracies and half-truths, rarely with any sort of supporting evidence. And then there are the ones where you simply act like a bully, most recently epitomized here:
http://helenair.com/articles/2008/08/21/opinions/readers_alley/schreiner_080821.txt
I'd like to think that you might do a little less of all that if you really had to take responsibility for your words.

While I am truly sorry that you've been harassed, I guess I might have to be the one to break the news that common sense should tell you there may be a reason why you were harassed. Just see how your hurtful words have angered one family in the past few days. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a couple of dads who might really like to have a chat with you. If you can't figure out why, try to think how you would feel if someone called your son currently serving in Afghanistan a whiner and sniveler. (Because I worry that you'll fly off the handle here, I'd like to repeat that I hope your son accomplishes his missions and returns home safely. My thanks go out to him for his service.)

You mention that your harassing mail arrived without a return address, and hence you consider the sender cowardly. In a rare moment of agreement between the 2 of us, you're positively correct that the sender was cowardly.

But if you do really value your anonymity on helenair.com, I would strongly advise you to be more careful in what you post. Please be aware that you have already provided information in your comments that leaves very little doubt as to your identity. After consideration, I will not post links to those because I do not wish to be a party in any way to further harassment of you.

Just to round this post out with an answer to the random couple of sentences at the end of purple's post, both parties like to describe themselves as the "big-tent party." Here's an article where Montana GOP chair Erik Iverson is quoted as saying, I refer to them [14 incumbent Republican legislators targeted as being 'socialist' by a certain other element within the MT Republican Party] as Republicans. Were a big-tent party. Weve got room for all Republicans of all types of ideologies.

Bit of a circus there.... Anyone who disagrees with how I've interpreted the situation (as I've described in the square brackets), please let me know - I'm always looking for some good spin. "

" Purple, as a right-winger, you are much more likely to be the perpetrator than the victim of terror, based on recent history. In July, Jim Adkisson shot 7 people - including children - in a Unitarian church based on his "hatred of the liberal movement" (per a letter he wrote.) On August 14, Tim Dale Johnson walked into the office of Arkansas Democratic Party chairman Bill Gwatney and shot him dead. Johnson blamed liberals for his having just been fired from his job at Target. The anthrax killer sent his deadly letters only to Democratic members of Congress and to members of the "liberal" media. Timothy McVeigh, who blew up the federal building in Oklahoma City, was an anti-government right winger. I can't think of any similar mass-killing of innocents by a liberal. None of this should be surprising given the non-stop torrent of invective on cable TV and talk radio demonizing liberals as traitors and terrorists. We liberals have much more reason to be concerned about violence from you than the reverse, given the hate you regularly spew toward liberals, gays, muslims, poor people, government employees, teenagers and so on. Clearly you have been thoroughly programmed by the Coulters and Limbaughs and Hannitys, and I'm guessing you've got an arsenal of weapons as well.

As for the guy who sent the white powder and threatening letter to John McCain's office, his name is Marc Harold Ramsey. He wrote the letter from jail where he is serving time for assaulting a police officer, and he was kind enough to include his name and return address on the envelope. A Secret Service spokesman stated "He is on record with us and he is known as a prolific letter writer." In his court affidavit, Ramsey said he sent the letter to McCain "to express his feelings about the United States government." The affidavit also says "Ramsey stated that his father was in Vietnam during the same time as Senator McCain and that the government takes care of Senator McCain but not his father, who suffers from Agent Orange." Purple, you can call this guy a liberal if it makes you feel better, but it looks to me like he's just a half-crazy guy angry at the government, which makes him like you as far as I can tell, except that he has a reason to be angry and he did use his real name. "

" "kzeiler"

Now why should I provide my real identity?

So you and some others from the looney left can either come to my residence and threaten me or mail me threatening letters as has happened in the past.

I'm still waiting for someone from the looney left to send some white powder in the mail as someone from the looney left did to at least two of Sen McCain's campaign offices.

Dims/Libs are big at accusing folks like me of being hate filled, yet you won't find me sending them hate-filled letters through the US postal service. When I got the last one, I went to the helena pd and they did squat. The thing is, those who send me threatening mail are so cowardly as to not include their return address.

All are reasons I no longer write letters to the editor - out of concern that someone from the looney left might actually do something to harm me or my family or my property.

The defeat-o-crats love to claim they are the "big tent" party. The only entity which I know of which has a "big tent" is a CIRCUS, so what does that say about the democrat party? "

" purple - You gotta forewarn a guy that you're about to write such funny stuff - I almost spewed my Sunday morning coffee when I checked back in on this thread since it currently has the most comments. Your arguments against global warming are some study (unreferenced as usual) and the FACT that the North Pole was once over the Pacific Ocean. Since I'm a geologist in real life, I knew there had to be something good here. After considering the risk of allowing this thread to be hijacked into a evolution-creationism flamewar, I'm going to kick into Paul Harvey mode and give "the rest of the story."

So while I was skeptical at first about insects & bogs (at first I thought maybe you meant former baseball star Wade Boggs!) in Antarctica, I used teh Google on Interwebz to find several news reports from earlier this month that seem to be what you're describing. Here's a link to the AP article as posted on http://www.livescience.com:
http://www.livescience.com/environment/080805-ap-moss-antarctica.html
Note that I tried searching foxnews.com, but its search on the frontpage doesn't seem to be working right now. Insects & moss indeed found in Antarctica - from 14 million years ago! Were humans engaged in agricultural practices then? Nope - hominids of any type weren't around for another 10 - 12 million years, and we homo sapiens didn't show up until around 30,000 years ago. Also, note that at the end of the article, the author of the study is quoted warning about the implications of climate change!

And the FACT that (what is now) the North Pole was once at the current position of the Pacific Ocean is most likely TRUE (all caps!!!). Or at least it's actually possible with continental drift and plate tectonics - I'm glad to hear that you might believe in those concepts. I'll be the first to admit that the geologic sub-discipline of paleotectonics isn't really in my wheelhouse, so I can tell you only that what is now the portion of the earth's crust at the North Pole hasn't been anywhere near the Pacific Ocean for several millions of years.
http://geology.com/pangea.htm
While searching for what particular tidbit that you might have heard, I did find out that there's evidence that the North Pole once had a subtropical climate -
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3631764.stm
Hmmm...seems that this coincided with mass extinction there. (Can't believe I'm even putting this here...I'm sure I'll get to learn all about how the BBC hates freedom.)

As long as I'm pointing out where you've provided "facts" related to geology, how about the place you heard about in eastern MT/western MT that holds 400BBbls of oil? Not sure if you ever saw my response, but it's true that the current estimates of the total reserves in the Bakken Shale are right around 400BBls. Only problem is that current technology will only let us recover a few percent at best.
http://helenair.com/articles/2008/08/07/opinions/top/irview_0800807.txt
Have no fear if you think I'm a naysayer - we're working on improving that!
http://helenair.com/articles/2008/08/14/state/110st_080814_bakken.txt

In any case "purple" at least some of us are weary of your "facts" that are really only half-truths at best. Most of your stuff seems to come from "last Thursday some guy told me that...." From now on, all of the "facts" you post that you don't even try to provide some background are likely to be met with "PROVE IT" from me. That will be your signal to at least try to provide some kind of backup. Maybe you could use teh Google on Interwebz!

Again, the one fact that I think many folks on here would like you to provide is your identity in real life. I'm quite certain that I can use content on helenair.com to show everyone who you are. I'll give you one week to show some capacity for courage and responsibility to own what you've written here yourself. Please post to this thread. After a week, I'll feel free to start dropping the info.

And a big thanks to diazo for providing some realistic numbers on taxes in this thread! Sorry to all that this post is so darn verbose.... "

And you seem to forget that that top one percent you talk about own businesses not unlike the one you most likely work at.

If so, you are living in fairytale land. "

The top 1% pays 27.6% of all federal taxes, but that 1% also owns 34.3% of the nations private wealth so you could argue they are underpaying. Considering that 1% owns more than the combined wealth of the bottom 90 percent, they clearly can afford to support the system that rewards them so handsomely and leaves many working people destitute. "

purple wrote on Aug 13, 2008 10:10 AM:

" "skooter"

Do you even know what percentage of taxes those in the upper income brackets pay?

The top 5 percent pay over 50 percent of the nation's taxes. But to folks like you, they should pay 100 percent, right? So doesn't that mean the rest aren't paying their fair share?

To liberals like you, it is all about redistribution of wealth -- take away from those who worked their butt off to earn what they have to give it away to those morons who are too damn lazy to get a job and pay their own way in life.

Liberals and communists have a lot in common with that idea and the world witnessed what communism did to Russia from the 1917 revolution until the collapse in the early 1990s. There was absolutely no motivation for the average russian to do anything, they went about their daily lives like mindless automats. "

He impresses me primarily because he is wise enough to listen to all sides and work in unconventional coalitions in order to move legislation along.
He knows that McCain has been in Washington too long and is steeped in Bush-partisan politics.
McCains' flip-flopping on the economy (and foreign policy) do not show any educated change of mind - they show which lobbyist he just got off the phone with.

Maura, you may be young - but you seem quite wise to me.
Thanks for doing your homework.
And I invite other folks here to educate yourselves and consider voting for Obama. "

" Hmmm, where to begin, first I am over 25 by many years, I have a lot of experiences, travels, trials, etc, I won't vote Republican this year for sure. As far as taxes, how else are we to get out from under the spending of this administration? They spent like there was no bottom to the wallet. I would rather pay higher taxes for our own programs that benefit middle class Americans then people getting rich off this war. Oh and the rich owning all the big businesses and the trickle down, hmm, when the rich have moved their companies to 3rd world countries we lost jobs and did we see any price reductions when they moved, nope, we actually had Republican writing bills to give those same companies tax breaks for moving those businesses to other countries. So when all that help to the rich stops, the middle guy, you and me might actually be able to pay power bills, medical bills and drive a car that isn't 10 years old. Maybe there will actually be jobs in the "GREENING of AMERICA". Oh and to be sure Global Warming is a natural event, been happening for a million or so years, but at the present rate of warming, we are about to lose some of our greatest forests, lakes and rivers to drought and disease, much faster then we should. We can slow that process down if we work to do so. The same people that whine about there not being anything we can do about Global Warming are the same people mad because they can no longer float certain rivers or travel through certain parts of the forest or no one is doing anything about the bug investation here or there, can't fish for this fish or can't camp in that spot. Wake up. "

skooter wrote on Aug 12, 2008 4:11 PM:

" Purple - its not like prices haven't gone up drastically during the last 8 years. Besides its only fair that they pay their fair share for what they get. The money and wealth they have accumulated is due to their own hard work, yes, but also partly due to the great society we've developed here...and part and parcel to that is the services, protection, institutions and oversight that good government provides.

Nobody wants unnecessary government or bureaucracy...but everybody loves their services and way of life here. You have to pay for that some how and the the wealthiest 1% got a sweet deal for 8 years of Bush and will now have to start paying their way. Bush has dug us into a huge deficit and somebody has to start paying for it. Run your country like you'd run your household in the Black not the RED...blame Bush. "

So in a round about way you are agreeing that Obama doesn't plan on increasing taxes on the middle class? But his increase on the 1% who are super wealthy isn't a good idea because (blank)...(very clever by the way) .... rolls down hill ;] So it will be Obamas fault if the wealthy business man will be out to get his money back somehow? I find that very interesting. "

You don't think the middle and lower class folks will feel the pinch when the rich are paying higher taxes - you never hear the phrase [blank] rolls down hill?

The rich are the ones whom own the businesses whom sell you the products you buy. You think they won't make up for lost income by increasing the prices THEIR businesses charge? "

By the way - Obama won't be repealing the majority of middle class cuts, its the rich 1% of the population who will feel the bite when their personal gifts (huge tax breaks & estate tax breaks) from Bush are repealed.

If anybody represents the middle class its Obama. McCain is an angry old rich man...he's an adulter for those who bring up the Bill Clinton perpetually, and it sounds like he's climbing into big oil's pockets. "

For instance: "he will protect us by taking away the right to keep and bear arms" or "to finance his huge social programs he will roll back the middle class tax cuts for one of the largest tax increases in history", or maybe, "he will finally put us under united nations rule so we don't have to worry about that pesky independence thing".

If there were actually some reasons for voting for the democrat, I would. As there are not, I won't. "
