Liedle will end her nearly six years as the sheriff Sept. 1.
The stress of the job has been taking its toll on her, she said. Liedle took last week off to discuss the decision with her family and assess.
“It became clear to me that life is too short,” she said.
“We are not defined by what we do but who we are. To me, I’m Cheryl. I just happen to be sheriff, which has been a huge honor.”
After 20 years in law enforcement, Liedle said she needs some time to do the things she loves, including quilting and riding horses. “I have a wonderful husband and family who haven’t seen too much of me,” she said.
Liedle said she leaves the position with great memories.
“But, I tell you, I have loved my job. The people of Lewis and Clark County mean everything and I hope I have served them well,” she said.
