Local sports briefs: Bruins soccer splits season-opening games

Capital broke a 1-all tie in the girls game with goals in the 72nd and 73rd minutes from freshman Sophie Carkulis and senior Jacie Vonada, respectively.
Vonada scored twice for the Bruins, who had a 17-7 edge in shots on goal.
“The girls played really well, moving the ball on both offense and defense,” coach Rick Thompson said. “They played almost at midseason form.”
The boys team had a 13-8 edge in shots on goal, but gave up goals in the 11th and 66th minute in the loss.
Capital plays Flathead at home Saturday in a doubleheader that begins with the girls game at 1 p.m. Townsend volleyball downs Big Timber in opener
Townsend opened its district volleyball schedule with a 25-8, 25-17, 25-16 victory over visiting Big Timber Thursday night.
Siobhan Flynn had 12 kills and three service aces and Gaelyn Domino dished out 28 assists to lead the Bulldogs.
Becky Moudree added seven kills and five blocks and Jessica Sagissor had six kills and three aces.
Haleigh Crnkovick had eight kills to lead Big Timber.
Townsend plays in a tournament in Livingston Saturday.
Saints volleyball set to host four-team tourney
After competing in tournaments in Washington and California, the Carroll College volleyball team will play host to a four-team tourney beginning today at the campus PE Center.
The Saints enter the tourney with a 6-2 record. They play Minot State at 7 p.m. tonight and Oklahoma Wesleyan and Azusa Pacific on Saturday.
Carroll is led by junior middle blocker Christina Smetana, who had a season-high 18 kills in a win Saturday and sophomore hitter Haylee Otteson, who had 11 kills and six blocks in a loss Saturday.
The Saints begin Frontier Conference matches Thursday at Rocky Mountain in Billings.
