Townsend, Jefferson dive into Class B volleyball play at home
By CURT SYNNESS - Independent Record - 09/11/08
The matchup between Townsend and the Eagles features two of the top teams in the Southern B Conference.
The Bulldogs have won both of the early season tournaments they’ve entered, capturing the Choteau and Livingston Invitationals.
In Livingston on Saturday, they beat defending Class A champion Lewistown in the semifinals and Manhattan Christian in the final.
Townsend beat the Eagles 25-14, 25-21 in the championship match.
Becky Moudree had 38 kills, 43 digs and nine blocks to lead the team, while Siobhan Flynn had 35 kills and 64 digs and Jessica Saggasor addd eight blocks. Gaelyn Domino finished with 111 assists and Delaware Hansen had 33 kills. Townsend is officially 1-0 on the season, since veteran coach Jill Flynn does not include games won in pool play tournaments for her records.
“So far it looks like we will be battling Manhattan Christian for districts this year,” Flynn said.
The Jefferson Panthers, under coach Nicole Henderson, are 1-1 on the year. Their last outing was a loss to Manhattan in four games. Henderson singled out 5-foot-8 sophomore Emily Flathers and Rose Mascarenas, a 5-1 senior, for their play.
“Emily came into the match as an injury replacement, and she really stepped up to the challenge of being one of our top players on the front row,” Henderson said. “And Rose is a defensive specialist who put out a full effort and had most of our digs.”
Jefferson is also scheduled to play Three Forks on Saturday.Townsend has the weekend off.
