Dress criticism is class envy

By Sharon Hazen, 611 1st St. - 09/21/2008

In response to the letter in the IR on Sept. 19 regarding “The value of an outfit,” I would describe this as nothing more than class envy.

Why shouldn’t anyone who works hard to make something of themselves be able to to buy, or wear, whatever they can afford. So what if Cindy McCain’s outfit costs $313,000.

Talk about having choices comparable to those of Marie Antoinette! How about Jacqueline Kennedy? The media used to critique her wardrobe to a tee, but no one bashed her on how much she would spend on her outfits. That’s because she was a Democrat and Cindy McCain is a Republican.

Instead of bashing Cindy McCain for what she spends on clothes, why not praise her for all the good that she’s done with her philanthropic kindness.

No, you want to break it down to show how many meals her one outfit could provide for the many in this country who are hungry.

Why not send a message to these people that if they just better themselves by getting a good education, a good job, and plan for their future, maybe they can provide for themselves, and not be so dependent on charity from others and the government.

" The cute part of this entire argument is that both sides seem to think single people represent an entire group.

I have more liberal perspectives, and would probably be classified as such, but as far as I'm concerned, Cindy McCain can buy whatever she wants for however much she wants.

And so what if she inherited her money? On the east coast, that's known (or at least used to be) as Old Money, and was actually considered a lot more respectable than New Money.

In all honesty, why is it anyone else's business what she does with her money? Or if her dress represents supposed "insecurity?" One could just as easily throw out that your lack of money could represent the failures of your entire family.

"Jealousy is simply and clearly the fear that you do not have value. Jealousy scans for evidence to prove the point - that others will be preferred and rewarded more than you. There is only one alternative - self-value. If you cannot love yourself, you will not believe that you are loved. You will always think it's a mistake or luck. Take your eyes off others and turn the scanner within. Find the seeds of your jealousy, clear the old voices and experiences. Put all the energy into building your personal and emotional security. Then you will be the one others envy, and you can remember the pain and reach out to them." ~Jennifer James

Who are you people to pass judgments on her? When your life is perfect, let me know...otherwise, that's probably where you should put your focus. "

" First off, to mention Jackie Kennedy in the same paragraph as Cindy McCain is nearly blasphemy! One cannot compare the two, especially since during the Kennedy administration, the media operated under a much different code. "

Imagine how much all of the gowns worn by all of these liberal women cost as well as the bling which goes with it.

One person is actually planning to wear six different outfits for this one night event.

So where is the criticism by the author of this letter? "

" Its more like liberals having this agenda where they [liberals] believe they [liberals] are entitled to tell others how they [the others] should spend their [the others] money.

Back before the creation of welfare, churchs and church organizations did a pretty good job of tending to the less fortunate and with little or no overhead. Along comes the democrat created welfare and its inherent high overhead costs, costing the taxpayers far more than what they gave in charitible contributions. Before the advent of welfare, chartible donations were far higher than they are today. "

" Spending that kind of money in an attempt to impress people shines a big fat light on a real small person who feels insecure.
Perhaps because she put the non-profit she worked for due to her stealing drugs for her personal use out of business.
Perhaps because of guilt she felt when the Dr that prescribed the drugs lost his license.
Could it be that time when she dated a married man, then married him?
Who really knows - but I find it sad for her and agree we should wish her well and hope she gets some help. "

" On another note for all the people complaining about what Cindy McCain spends on her clothes, the next time you reach for a Budweiser product....just think its another few bucks in HER pocket of her $25,000 dress. If you don't want to patronize her then stop drinking BEER!!!!! Otherwise leave her alone and let her be herself. "

" Class envy? There is nothing classy about Cindy McCain. She inheireted her wealth. Stole meds. to feed her drug habit and did no jail time..Yup thats classy.
So if those people who have no resources for a good education and/or a good job are lazy and have their hands out for charity are beneath you?

Lets bail out the greedy in Wall Street. They had a good education and good jobs, yet they have their hands outstretched for good old Gov. welfare. Double standard?

I do however, feel sorry for Cindy. She looks to me like she is a mentally beaten down woman. I have no facts on this..just my observation. "

" It's not class envy but rather the christian approach to life. Christ would not have liked to see that amount of $ being spent so foolishly when it could have helped so many. This is the problem with the right--hypocrisy. Don't profess to be a christian and act this way.(How many houses did Christ have?)
The attitude of"I got mine, you get yours" also does not follow christian beliefs. We're to help those in need. If we continue present policies, there will be no $ for those downtrodden to get an education nor will jobs be available as they have been shipped overseas to increase profits for the cindy mccains .
Obama actually did come from an underpriviledged household and became educated to obtain the position he is in today. It was not handed to him but the spin doctors of the right try to make him an elitist. What a joke. "

" Very well said. As a Democrat for McCain I agree with you completely. Cindy McCain is a very generous and giving person who happens to be wealthy because her parents were hard working people who planned for the future. She acknowledges this as she discusses her philanthropic endeavors. "

" Good grief lady - just run out and get a good job, eh? RIGHT. In case you haven't noticed hundreds of thousands of good jobs have been lost to India, China and Mexico in the last eight years. Every republiclown president since Nixon has abetted in the ruination of our economy to help line the pockets of people like Cindy McCain and the oil, insurance and bank thieves. When people don't have and can't find a job, can't afford food or decent shelter, it is only natural that they start to notice little things like $300,000 shiny baubles hanging from the ears of those who have helped destroy lives and jobs. In the Kennedy era, people had jobs and food. Big difference from now. "

" This is a total non-issue. The woman can wear whatever she wants. Let's focus on the real issues: the problems facing our country right now, the candidates, the differences between them and their plans to help the country. She stumps for McCain and is in the news, so her words are fair game, but picking apart her wardrobe seems unnecessary. "

" I agree. No offense, but it shouldn't matter how much Cindy McCain spends on ANYTHING. It's her money and noone elses. The couple signed a prenuptial agreement before they got married so that would explain why McCain himself did not know how many houses he owns or how much is "rich". In my book $50,000 is rich but then again I survivie on $23,000 a year for a family of 4. It depends on how you were raised and what your true values are. Mine is NOT money, but what can be measured of love, family and friends that makes me "rich". I applaud Cindy McCain on what she does. She loves to help people and not tear them down (especially for what they are or aren't wearing). "

" Sharon,
Very well said. Cindy McCain's clothing should not matter in this election, her job as "First Lady" is to be a goodwill ambassador for the president. She has no personal agenda.
I'm sure the democrats will pounce on your letter, so be it. "

Colton wrote on Sep 21, 2008 4:41 AM:

" The letter published on Sept 19th was just business as usual for democrats to portray Republicans as rich and uncaring. It is a feeble attempt at class warfare.

Anyone that knows anything about Cindy McCain (it is all public record) knows that she has spent most of her adult life doing charitable works for the extremely poor, providing free surgical operations for children with severe facial deformities, and feeding the poor. Her youngest daughter was an orphan from Bangladesh, India. Cindy serves on the boards of several charitable organizations. "
