Girl dies in car crash
By ANGELA BRANDT - Independent Record - 09/23/08
Eliza Wiley IR photo editor - Emergency workers attend to the scene of a two-car collision near the intersection of Green Meadow Drive and Foxborro Lane.
Jessica Lynn Bright, 17, a junior at Capital High School, died at the scene of the wreck, according to Lewis and Clark County Coroner Mickey Nelson.
A Helena woman in her mid-20s was transported by ambulance to St. Peter’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Jeramy Rice.
The woman underwent surgery for her injuries. Her condition was not immediately known.
Rice said Bright, who was not wearing a seat belt, was driving a Honda sedan heading north. She drifted off the side of the road, overcorrected and was struck on the driver’s side by the woman’s southbound Ford Taurus.
The woman, who was extricated from her vehicle, was wearing her seat belt and her station wagon’s airbags deployed, Rice said. The Honda sedan did not have airbags.
The cause of the wreck, which occurred at approximately 5:40 p.m., remains under investigation. Traffic on Green Meadow Drive was diverted for about two hours while officials surveyed the scene. The Montana Highway Patrol was joined by the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office, St. Peter’s Ambulance and West Valley and Lewis and Clark County volunteer fire departments.
This crash occurred roughly one mile north of where Angela Mae Dwyer, also a Capital High School 17-year-old, died in a car wreck just 20 days earlier on Sept. 2.
Helena Public Schools Superintendent Bruce Messinger late Monday night said the high school’s grief counseling team will be available this morning for students and staff. Bright’s younger brother, Ray, is a freshman at Capital High School.
“Obviously this is a really hard situation for the family. Our hearts go out to them. We’ll do all we can in terms of support as we did a couple weeks ago,” Messinger said. Reporter Angela Brandt: 447-4078 or angela.brandt@helenair.com

I do agree about the speed limit! I have had close calls on York and Wylie Drive because people trying to pass (with double yellow lines)
I swear I could go ninety miles a hour on the interstate between Helena and East Helena and still get passed!
I even had people try to pass me in construction areas!
Now imagine what will happen when we have a snow storm and icy roads the first time with fall/winter coming!
I wear my seatbelt because I do not want to end up another fatal car accident statistic! "

I too, seldom take Green Meadow anymore. People drive like they are insane ! They barrell on by you even if you're a few miles under the speed limit and angry as can be if you slow them down a bit. You people know who you are !! Why don't you slow it down and take heed to other people's safety as well as your own on our highways. I'm hear to tell you. You are nowhere closer to that stop sign than I am when we all stop. Make time for yourself, otherwise you will be out of time. "

and please wear your seatbelts. we know they are a pain, and not as comfortable as you'd like - but they might save your life. "

I can't tell you how many close calls I have had with drivers drifting over the center line on Green Meadow...the road is dangerous!! People need to slow down and pay close attention; cars can be a deadly weapon!! "
