State briefs: League honors 3 Montana football players

BILLINGS - Athletes from Montana Western, Montana State-Northern, Rocky Mountain College and Eastern Oregon University have been named the Frontier Conference football players of the week, the league said Monday.

Michah Mamiya of Western and Kasey Peters of Rocky share the offensive honor, while Jared Weigel of MSU-Northern earned the defensive award. Thomas Akers of Eastern Oregon is the special teams player of the week.

Mamiya, a freshman quarterback from Honolulu, was 22 of 36 passing for 365 yards and four touchdowns in Montana Western's 35-31 win over Eastern Oregon. He also rushed for 11 yards on five carries.

Peters, a junior quarterback from Newport Beach, Calif., was 36 of 55 for 452 yards and three touchdowns in Rocky's 27-22 win over Montana Tech. He also rushed for 28 yards on four attempts.

Weigel, a sophomore defensive end from Havre, had seven solo tackles, two assisted tackles, two tackles for losses of 21 yards, two quarterback sacks and two pass breakups in MSU-Northern's 10-17 loss to Carroll College.

Akers, a junior kicker/punter from Vancouver, Wash., was four for four for extra points and kicked a 44-yard field goal in Eastern's loss to Montana Western. He also had five punts for 199 yards including a 52-yard punt.

Big Sky conference announces players of week

Cameron Higgins and J.D. Folsom of Weber State and Robbie Dehaze of Northern Arizona have been named the Big Sky Conference football players of the week.

Higgins earned offensive honors, while Folsom won the defensive award. Dehaze was named the special teams player of the week.

Higgins is a sophomore quarterback from Kai, Hawaii. He completed 21 of 33 passes for 380 yards with four throwing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown and no interceptions in Weber State’s 32-27 road win over Sacramento State.

Folsom, a senior linebacker from Salmon, Idaho, had five solo tackles, nine assisted tackles and a forced fumble in the Wildcats’ win.

Dehaze, a senior punter/kicker from Sherwood, Ore., made a pair of 32-yard field goals in Northern Arizona’s 19-14 road victory over Southern Oregon. He averaged 44 yards on six punts.

Thibeault, Jepsen earn Big Sky honors

Jaimie Thibeault of the University of Montana and Erica Jepsen of Portland State share the Big Sky Conference player-of-the-week award in volleyball.

Both players led their teams to 2-0 records during last week’s start of league play.

UM opened conference play at home, posting a 3-1 victory over Northern Colorado and a 3-2 win over Northern Arizona. Thibeault, a sophomore middle blocker from Red Deer, Alberta, averaged 2.89 kills per game on .333 hitting and 1.44 blocks per game.

She had 11 kills on .409 hitting with five blocks against the Bears, and 15 kills on .281 hitting and eight blocks against the Lumberjacks.

Montana will face the 2-0 Vikings on Thursday night in Portland, Ore., before playing at Eastern Washington on Saturday night.
