The Carroll College volleyball team (17-6 overall, 7-3 Frontier Conference) heads on the road this weekend to face off with conference opponents University of Great Falls and Montana State University-Northern.

The Saints will face off with UGF (12-11, 6-4) tonight at 7 p.m. before heading to Havre to face the Lights (1-16, 1-9) at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Carroll beat both teams in four sets earlier this season and are currently third in the Frontier with just four games left in the regular season.

The Saints are led by junior middle hitter Christina Smetana, who is averaging 2.8 kills per set. The Capital alum missed last week’s wins over Montana Tech and University of Montana Western with an illness, but has been to play this weekend.

Sophomore middle hitter Haylee Otteson, meanwhile, continues her dominance on the defensive end. She leads the conference in blocks with 1.4 per set, just above Smetana with 1.2.

Freshman Maureen Frauenholtz leads the team in digs (3.4 per set) and aces (0.6 per set), while junior Katie St. John and freshman Caitlin Tocci share duties at the setter position.

The Saints will have their biggest match to start the weekend against UGF, who could even up their Frontier standings with a win over Carroll.

Tosha Nunen leads the squad in kills with 2.8 per set, but it was Marissa Stanchfield who did the most damage against the Saints last time, picking up 12 kills.

The Argos are coming off two straight losses, including a three-set drubbing by Lewis-Clark State last week.

Capital High spikers heading to Kalispell

The Capital High volleyball team is on the road this weekend for a pair of Western AA matches.

Capital (2-6, 3-14) travels to play Flathead High (2-7, 3-12) tonight, and then meet Glacier High (4-4, 8-9) on Saturday. Capital is sitting in fifth place in the division, just ahead of the sixth-place Bravettes, and behind the Wolfpack, who are in fourth.

“We saw Glacier earlier in the year and beat them in three sets,” said Bruins coach Sarah Urban. “In our first match with Flathead, we lost a tough one in five sets. In order to win this weekend, we’ll just have to serve and pass well, be consistnet and eliminate the errors.”

Coach Urban pointed out the recent play of Desiree Schaumann and Emily Burk at the Missoula tournament last weekend.

“Desiree had a lot of digs and was passing well in Missoula. Emily was setting consistently well, she did a good job on her set choices,” Urban said.
