KTVH goes digital early

By JOHN HARRINGTON - Independent Record - 11/11/08

After some initial power issues, Beartooth NBC — KTVH channel 12 in Helena — successfully made its transition to a digital broadcast signal Monday afternoon, a few months earlier than mandated by the Federal Communications Commission.

General Manager Kathy Ernst said the station’s transmitter, atop Hogback Mountain in the Big Belts northeast of Helena, had issues with its power supply immediately after the noon changeover to digital.

“When we switched and turned off analog, we lost power,” Ernst said Monday afternoon. “(Workers) had to make some adjustments up there, and now it’s coming in.”

Viewers on cable or satellite television shouldn’t need to make any changes to their hardware or programming to be able to view the local station, Ernst said, and those having trouble should contact their service providers.

People who use antennas or “rabbit ears” with TVs without a built-in digital tuner to view channel 12 will need to hook up to a digital converter box in order to receive the new signal.

Several electronics retailers around town, including Wal-Mart, Kmart, Shopko, Hastings and Radio Shack, were sold out of the converter boxes Monday, but most expected to replenish supplies this week.

Ernst said Beartooth made the switch to digital three months before the Feb. 17 deadlines primarily because of where its transmitter is located. The new equipment had to be installed on the mountaintop last month, before seasonal roads got snowed in, and Ernst said she wasn’t comfortable with crews trying to reach the transmitter in the middle of February if issues arose around the time of the change.

Converter boxes start at around $50, with fancier versions costing more. Because other local stations haven’t yet made the conversion to digital, a box with an “analog pass-through” is needed to allow for viewing of both digital and analog signals. By the February deadline, the pass-through won’t be necessary as all channels will be digital.

The transition comes at a challenging time in the media industry, and Beartooth isn’t immune to the pain.

The station announced that it’s laying off four employees and canceling the weekend local news telecasts, which accounted for two 30-minute broadcasts on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

“We gave up weekend news because it just wouldn’t pay for itself,” Ernst said. “All of our stations have had to cut back, and the only thing I could cut was weekend news.”

She said weekend broadcasts require additional staffing beyond the team that puts together broadcasts Monday through Friday. She noted that weekend newscasts, which returned to Helena’s airwaves around four years ago, were popular with viewers but didn’t generate enough advertising revenue to remain viable.

Ernst said Channel 12 maintains a news staff of eight to produce its twice-nightly local broadcasts.

" It's unfortunate that we are losing local weekend news, but it looks like this company has to cut back like so many of us are at this time due to the economy. You can't pay people to work if there is no money coming in and the article states that the weekend news was not getting the advertising revenue to support it. I know some of the employees at KTVH and they're like many other small city stations - news staff come here to learn a craft. The people meniotned in other comments probably were here to get some experience so they could move on to bigger cities that have the revenue to support the local news. Instead of complaining about your town's tv station, help them out by shopping or using services from those companies that advertise on KTVH, so they can continue supporting the station. I say the same for our local radio and newspaper outlets. We shoulnd't expect these companies to give and give without getting some support in return. "

" I have problems with KTVH using HR20-700s from DIRECTV. No surprise that I'd have problems with KTVH. I wish they were forced to compete with satellite national NBC channels but nope. "

" This article has an error,... what a suprize.

Digital converters will be required till KFBB and KXLF convert to digital. Since they are low level power stations they are not required to change in Feb. They may not ever change till required by the government with a new rule change.

So you will need a digital converter for a long time.

Also KTVH is not transmitting over Dishnetwork. Something wrong at the station. So now I have to go to bed early and watch on the bedroom TV if I want to watch NBC. "

" Very Sad. In the past several weeks we have lost Curtis, Jason Epner, and now Justin Betti. It's sad the station didn't make it worth Curtis' and Jason's while to stay and then laid off Justin yet they keep the dead wood of Al Marks. The Station may be "going digital" but they are archaic in their management ideas. "

" Wait until Monday? Are you kidding? The IR has this site updated all day, every day. And no offense to Al Marks -- he's a stud -- but the IR's coverage of Carroll football and all other sports is WAAAAAY better. Watch one of their Saints football videos for a change from KTVH. It's up there pretty quick on Saturdays and it's much better. Plus, all you have to do to know what's on KTVH every night is to read the IR two days earlier. I say good riddance to the weekend newscasts. "

" Helena is losing it's weekend news broadcasts... again? So, when it comes to late breaking local news or sports highlights, we'll just have to wait until Monday? Ridiculous! Who cares about a Saturday playoff football game on Monday evening? Who cares about the Helena area Friday evening through Sunday afternoon? Apparently not KTVH! I guess KFBB, KRTV, KXLF and other surrounding news stations will just have to upstaff and pick up the slack and we'll be stuck with watching another newscast (similar to KTVH currently) that can't focus on one single geographic area.
