Tom Jester, an East Helena man who suffered burns to 50 percent of his body at this year’s fair demolition derby, will appear at a benefit in his honor Saturday afternoon.

Jester, who is home after spending months in a burn center in Salt Lake City, said he is touched by the outpouring of donations from the community.

“It’s amazing the number of people who have helped,” he said.

The benefit will begin at 3 p.m. at the 4-H Community Center on York Road. It will include a chili feed, music and auctions.

Jester estimates that his medical bills have accumulated to about $750,000 so far, with some of that being covered by insurance.

Jester was burned during the demolition derby at the annual Last Chance Stampede and Fair on July 27. According to witness accounts, a transmission line ruptured during the event and sprayed into Jester’s 1978 Chrysler Cordoba, which subsequently caught fire.

While in Salt Lake City, Jester endured four surgeries to graft skin onto the burn sites, which are mostly on his arms and legs.

Organizers of the benefit have gathered page after page of donations from local businesses and individuals. There will be at least three tables set out for silent auction items. About 30 gift certificates will be auctioned. Larger items include log furniture and a sprinkler system.

Those who are unable to attend the benefit can donate funds to help with Jester’s costs via an account set up in his name at the American Federal Savings Bank.
