Independent Record - 11/26/08

When the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision selection committee prepared the 16-team playoff bracket Sunday, it gave fans of the University of Montana plenty of intrigue to ponder.

The No. 5 Grizzlies are the top seed in their quarter of the bracket, despite being ranked higher than one team — Cal Poly.

The Grizzlies are also seeded higher than a team it lost to during the regular season — Weber State.

And, they play the lowest-ranked team in the bracket — Texas State — in the first round.

The Grizzlies (11-1) and Bobcats (8-4) are scheduled to meet Saturday at Washington-Grizzly Stadium in Missoula.

The winner will play the winner of the Weber State (9-3) at Cal Poly (8-2).

Texas State secured its spot in the playoffs by rallying from a 21-point deficit to beat Sam Houston State, 48-45, in overtime Saturday.

The win earned the Bobcats the conference title and an automatic berth in the playoffs, despite not having the best record in the conference.

No. 11 Central Arkansas finished 10-2 and 6-1 in Southland games, but is ineligible to compete in the playoffs due to its move from Div. II to Div. I.

Both teams enter Saturday’s game on winning streaks. Montana has won its last six games, while Texas State has won three straight.

The Bobcats have won their last five road games, and have five come-from-behind victories.

Texas State’s offense averaged 38.3 points and 460 yards of total offense per game.

Sophomore Karrington Bush ran for 1,039 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Quarterback Bradley George, a 6-foot-6 junior, passed for 2,401 yards and 25 touchdowns with five interceptions.

Senior Cameron Luke caught 68 passes for 1,193 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Montana averaged 34.3 poitns per game, but gave up a Big Sky Conference-best 17.2 points per game on defense.

Senior back Chase Reynolds is just 15 yards shy of 1,000, but has run for 722 yards in the past five games.

Senior quarterback Cole Bergquist has thrown for 2,466 yards and 24 touchdowns with just five interceptions.

Texas State’s football history includes NCAA Div. II national championships in 1981 and ‘82 and a spot in the FCS playoff semifinals in 2005.

The program, which once participated in the NAIA, is working raise support to compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
