Burglars made off with nearly $40,000 worth of goods, including art works by Charlie Russell and Marcel Duchamp, from the Montana Club over the weekend.

The culprits took three paintings — “The Land Before God” by Russell, valued at about $10,000, a Russell print and the Duchamp painting — and a bronze sculpture entitled “The Scribe,” according to Helena Police Det. Richard Drysdale.

Drysdale didn’t know the name of the Duchamp painting or who the sculptor was Monday evening, and no one was available for comment at the club.

Investigators plan to meet with club officials today to determine exactly what was taken.

The break-in at the private club on Sixth Avenue occurred sometime Saturday night or early Sunday morning. An employee reported the burglary to police at 1:28 p.m. Sunday.

Three computers also were stolen. The items were taken from the club’s business center, Drysdale said.

The incident remains under investigation. Drysdale believes the crime was committed by more than one person.
