Rehberg will back forest stimulus plan
By Associated Press - 01/02/09
Pyramid Mountain Lumber Co. and The Wilderness Society are among signers of a letter seeking stimulus dollars for ‘‘important, shovel-ready forest restoration work here in Montana.’’
The company and the society are two members of the Montana Forest Restoration Committee, established two years ago with 34 representatives of the wood-products industry, conservation groups, forest recreation interests and the state and federal governments. Committee members said they wanted a collaborative approach to management of federal forests, to end gridlock that has occurred when some interests were emphasized to the detriment of others.
In the letter to congressional delegates last week, the committee’s steering group said the U.S. Forest Service’s Missoula-based Northern Region has a list of forest projects ready to go if funds are available. Any economic stimulus package should fund about $100 million in Northern Region projects for which environmental reviews have been completed, the letter says. The region includes Montana and parts of several neighboring states.
Of the $100 million, Montana projects should get about $58 million, an investment that would support nearly 1,340 new full- and part-time jobs, the steering group said. Proposed projects include reforestation, work against noxious weeds, fish and wildlife efforts, trail work and range improvement.
Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., said Wednesday that he will ‘‘stand up for Montana in any upcoming economic stimulus package’’ and finds it critical that Congress develop a plan ‘‘to initiate long-term projects that will spur economic growth, and not just one-time checks.’’ Efforts to obtain comment Wednesday from Montana Sens. Max Baucus and Jon Tester were unsuccessful.
