Don't cull - eliminate

By Allan Stricker, 2266 Goldrush Ave. - 01/04/09

I am tired of all the bleeding hearts and the deer. I enjoyed them when there were a few and they were scared of people and cars. Those days are 10 years gone. Deer used to never walk in front of cars except by accident at night. Now they expect traffic to stop and walk down the middle of the streets. They eat everything. The nursery says potentillas and lilacs are immune — not so. They come up on your deck and eat your plants. The bucks chase you out of your own yard during the rut. They break your sprinkler heads. And the latest — they cut your Christmas light wires with their very sharp hooves. And deer droppings everywhere.

As to FWP or city, whoever counted them — get a clue. The chance of only 700 is as likely as the sun rising in the west tomorrow. At any given time of the day or night I shouldn’t expect to see 1 percent of the total deer in Helena from our bedroom window. Having become very large rodents, not game animals, they all need to be eliminated. At least new wild deer would be scared again.

" My bad...your right...it was silly to think the IR would keep you as an employee after some of the hatefull accusations you have leveled at them. Thanks for setting me straight. LOL "

" "gun"

Where did I say I deliver for the IR? You do know that OTHER newspapers deliver in Helena, right? "

" You know the biggest problem isn't the deer. You live on Goldrush ave huh when I was little I used to play there I hiked the mountain and watched the abundance of wildlife that lived there. Our house was on Stuart just down the road. We never had a deer problem. Then people wanted to live higher on the mountain so they built bigger grander homes so they could own the view of the valley, and higher and higher these houses go. Now in order to hike our little mountain you have to drive threw a ridiculous neighborhood that most of Helena couldn't afford to live in and then park. Its crazy that all you people cry out oh the deer oh the deer kill them off and save our poodle, yet you still want to live on a mountain. You complain about damage to objects; physical things that only have a financial value. Its people like you and your ridiculous homes that caused the problem. Get off the mountain or build a bigger fence. Shame on you for desecrating god's creatures for your own vain endeavors. I hope the karma you create for your self eats you in the end. "

" There are dozens of actual "problems" I would rather my tax dollars go to than the suddenly vicious deer population in Helena that stand to kill thousands of us if we don't get them first. I have three bucks in my yard almost every morning. Sure hope I live to see tomorrow. "

" Good Grief People. Helena has a problem with deer in the city. Not much argument there. We need to deal with it. You can't stop people from buying land outside the city limits, that is a right we still have. Deer carry disease and ticks, we need to protect ourselves. Maybe if people stopped throwing out insane messages to the IR and started actually looking at the issues we can come up with something that helps and satisfies everyone. "

" the only thing I can say is PURPLE you deliver papers for the IR?? They read your hate on this blog and they have to know who you are....WOW...good for you IR, way to turn the cheek and employ someone who hates your paper. "

" On January 15 the FWP commission is going to issue a decision on the issue of the City continuing the Pilot project for an additional 150 deer. Most likely they will approve the reduction as Helena does have more deer living within it's city limits then are acceptable to most of the property owners and they do suffer from vehicle accidents, getting impaled on fences, caught in wire etc. This causes a lot of extra work of the game wardens and the Animal control Wardens and the Police. A landowner really shouldn't have to live in a city like Helena with his yard fenced like he was trying to keep out criminals. While it is nice to see a deer now and then in the city, having herds of deer destroying gardens, trees and even the siding of homes is really not acceptable. Also are the deer really having that great of a quality of life. The argument that people living on the upper east side or Mount Helena are at fault for the deer living in town is really not fair. Every one of us who takes up a piece of land has made a difference. The folks who built on the flats moved the deer to the hills etc. Helena is a growing city and with it comes problems that must be addressed. We can't just let the deer herd grow until it gets so overcrowded they die off from illness or seriously hurt someone. I have not heard one city commissioner or FWP employee or FWP commissioner speak of removing all the deer from Helena. Just to get a handle on the numbers. Also for the ones who want the deer moved, think that one over a little more. These are tame deer, they only know how to live in the city. If you do some research you will find that deer do not do well being moved and most die within one year. If you plant a garden and the plants in your rows are too numerous, you thin out a few so the others plants can grow stronger. It's no different with animals and that's why we hire professionals to manage our game herds. Even if the city removes 150 more deer from Helena, there will continue to be more deer living in town then the land around Helena. A continuing program each year to keep the numbers in check will be necessary as other cities around the county do. "

" So Mr. Levi79, you are proposing wiping the whole species of deer out completely? That is what would have to happen in order for there to be no highway accidents involving them. Then what's next? Should we just continue wiping out our whole wildlife in general, so that man can not have accidents with them?

There is a wonderful quote..."The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated".

With all the killing lately, just because people don't want their flowrs eaten, it is no wonder people in our city think that killing cats just because they don't happen to like them and killing dogs out their vehicles windows when they haven't been lucky in the woods, is perfectly alright.

"Kill the deer before they kill us!!" Sheeesh! What a drama queen! "

" Again, deer are killing people. When you realize that enough is enough????? My wife and I do not drive at night because we are so afraid of hitting a deer. We also live in a rural area, and are tired of dragging dead deer out of our yard. I'm also an Emergency responder, and have been to many wrecks with deaths due to deer. An airbag will deploy when a deer comes in contact with a vehicle, and will usually result in some broken bone. Also, when a buck deer is hit, the horns can easily come over the hood, go through a windshield, and hit a vital organ of a person. The deer problem needs to be stopped. Kill the deer before they kill all of us!!!! "

" Mr Sticker, do you even remember what the southhills looked like BEFORE they began building where you live? It was forest land, where the deer lived and roamed as nature intended for them to do.

You home is worth what, $ 300,000

Oh how I feel so sorry for you. Since you own a home in an area which used to be covered by trees, aren't you part of the problem?

Just how many more deer began appearing AFTER those luxury homes were built higher up the hill from you?

How many more deer began appearing after they cleared the land for SNOB HILL?

The city and county should put their foot down on further incursions into the forest lands surrounding this city. They cause the current problem with the deer.

Practically every morning, for the past 5 or 6 years, while delivering papers in the southhills area I encounter deer. I have yet to encounter an agressive one. They usually turn tail and move out of my path, including an 8-point buck I encounter a couple of days ago. I make every effort to avoid contact with them. "

" Goldrush ave, an area I used to love hiking as a kid. Now a modern day suburia for the rich. Hey Mr. Stricker, you're living on a mountain...what do you expect? Personnally (and I have said this before) I have no real issue with addressing the deer problem, only that killing in large quantities, at best, is a short term fix. And I firmly believe so long as rich folk are able to buy up lots of land in the mountains surrounding our city the problem remains.

I can see what you probably can't. When I lived here 26 years ago, there wasn't this problem in town. Having since returned the town is now in the mountains. That leads me to believe a couple things. 1, hunting restrictions have aided to the population problem and 2, expansion into the woods. Not only hunting restrictions but lets face it, even if there weren't restrictions chances are the land were I would want to go hunt the deer is now private land. Wasn't 30 years ago. To the bleeding heart folks that see a serious deer problem I have 2 questions. First, are you one of these well off folks that bought land in the mountains and 2, can I come hunt on your land? "

" Clearly one of the many who are havng real issues with this deer population. I disagree though with Mr. Strickler though. While I am for controlling the population of deer in Helena, I am not for eliminating them. Like most subjects, the answer is in the middle...that is where common sense resides most of the time. "
