Sarah Cook wasn't impressed with the selection of used children's clothing she found around Helena shortly after her second son was born.

"When we had our second, we just needed a few more things, and we didn't want to buy new," said Cook, 28 and the mother of boys ages 1 and 4.

So after nearly a year of planning, Cook, who moved here with her family from Missoula last summer, is about a month away from opening to doors to Pipsqueak: Second Chance Boutique.

The consignment store, opening in June, is at 639 Helena Ave., near the Premiere Dance Company and Capital Textile. She plans to sell clothing from newborn up to size 6.

"We're going to run on a 50-50 consignment basis," said Cook, 28. "People can bring stuff in, and we're only going to take things that are really nice, that people would want to buy again. And as soon as the item sells, they'll be able to use the money in the store or get a check or cash."

Cook said consignments are for 90 days, at which time unsold merchandise can be picked up, or be placed in the store's "quarterly quarter" sale, with all items 25 cents and proceeds going to local nonprofits.

The 1,800-square-foot space will be as kid-friendly as possible, with a playroom, changing table and nursing chair available for customers' use.

Cook is currently seeking consignment inventory so the store will be stocked ahead of next month's opening. She's not limiting the store to clothing -- cribs, strollers and other baby and toddler accessories are welcome. Toys too, though they'll be carefully screened after the recent rash of lead-related recalls.

"If you're not sure, bring it in," Cook said. "Anything that people can re-use. This is the ultimate in recycling."

Fish follow: Last week's item about the new tropical fish store in town gave the short shrift to Tressie Knudson, who her husband, Glen, told me did most of the work putting the business plan together and is the person running the business on a day-to-day basis. I'm sorry for the oversight.
