The former Louie's Grocery on 11th Avenue, which until its closure a couple months ago was something of a slice of Americana from a byegone era, is once again stocked with items from that bygone era.
With a fresh coat of paint on the walls, Jeanie Oliver recently moved her antiques and collectibles business, Finders Keepers, into the former grocery and convenience store at the corner of 11th and Lamborn.
Oliver and Finders Keepers previously spent nearly two years in space down by the railroad depot. The new space is bigger, brighter and more open than the previous three-room floor plan.
The store features an ecclectic mix of items from the past, from flatwear and small appliances to jewelry, glassware, tools, signs and prints.
Going Gray: Demographically, Montana already has one of the oldest populations in the country, and the average age is projected to get even higher in coming years.
That could happen sooner rather than later if a lot of Americans heed the advice of one national real estate firm. In USA Today's weekend magazine last weekend, a report from Coldwell Banker ranked Helena as the top retirement destination in the country to ";buy now, retire later."
The list of five top cities for young retirees (ages 55 to 59) also included Pensacola, Fla., Creve Coeur, Mo., Traverse City, Mich., and, in fifth place, Butte.
None of those sound like the sunsplashed, shuffleboard-dominated retirement havens of Arizona or Florida. But the study did highlight Helena's art galleries, local symphony and ";1,000-plus miles of mountain and forest trails."
