Not content with two businesses, Scott Boles just opened a third.
A practicing psychologist who also owns a dog toy business, Boles recently opened the newest gym in Helena. CrossFit Helena is at 1018 W. Custer, in space formerly occupied by Christman Roofing.
Boles, 47, said he decided to open a gym after having a couple of back surgeries and learning the importance of training with good posture and good core function. He recently trained in Reno in the CrossFit method of training.
Boles described the CrossFit method as "a model of fitness which follows functional fitness - it's high-intensity and constantly varied, because our lives are constantly varied."
The gym isn't fancy - "We don't have a bunch of mirrors, we don't have pretty carpets, and we don't hand out towels," Boles said - and it's not open any set hours. All the training is done with a trainer, either individually or in a small group.
Instead of machines, Boles said CrossFit relies on more basic fitness equipment: think barbells, medicine balls, gymnastic rings and ropes. And lots of pull-ups and push-ups.
Boles looked for space closer to downtown, but selected the Custer location because it was affordable and it had the high ceilings he needed for the gym's rings and ropes.
He said the CrossFit program can be scaled for people of all ages and fitness levels. He's hosting an open house on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, check out www.crossfithelena.com.
Tea for skin
Lora Behlmer has moved her business one block north on the Downtown Walking Mall - and added tea to the mix.
Behlmer, who previously worked in dermatology as a physician's assistant and also spent time in the pharmaceutical industry, opened Nature's Topicals two years ago on the southernmost block of the Walking Mall.
Earlier this month she relocated into the Placer, at 21 N. Last Chance Gulch, expanded her space and her product offerings, and changed the name to Nature's Topicals and Teas.
"It's closer to more shops and the (Holiday Inn) hotel traffic, a lot of people like to walk in this area, and I wanted to stay on the Gulch," Behlmer said of her new location.
The shop's core offerings are natural, botanical skin care products - lotions, shampoos, foot care, baby products and the like.
The new space allows her to now carry organic drinking teas, Montana bath infusion teas, body dips, gourmet organic Hawaiian coffee and Hawaiian sugar cane. The business now hosts tea tastings every Tuesday.
