Gary Kimble is 50 years old, but his mom still keeps track of everywhere he goes.

"She has a little map and she sticks pins in it," said Kimble, who will visit his 800th city during a current tour with the Broadway production of "Peter Pan."

The show will visit the Helena Civic Center at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 3.

Kimble, who plays Captain Hook, has visited 64 countries over the past 30 years as a touring actor based in New York City. "Peter Pan" marks his 19th tour, and he says he's still loving every minute.

"It's kind of like a church experience to me," said Kimble, who said he considers it a great privilege to bring theater to audiences who might not otherwise get to see it.

The Middle East, China, Thailand and Korea are just a few of the places Kimble has traveled to perform popular American musicals like "Annie" and "Man of La Mancha." According to Kimble, cultural barriers don't matter much when it comes to "It's a Hard Knock Life."

"People love 'Annie' all over the world," said Kimble, who has done several tours in the role of Daddy Warbucks. "Everybody knows it. It's just crazy."

The other faction of the foreign audience tends to be expatriate American businessmen and women.

"They're just so excited to have someone from home," Kimble says.

Although the touring lifestyle can get old for some, Kimble says it suits him to a tee, even after 30 years.

"I love everything about it," says Kimble. "There's just no stress for me in it whatsoever."

Having first peformed it when he was 12 and for a previous Broadway tour, the role of Captain Hook is near and dear to Kimble's heart. This time around, he said he's found a deeper connection to the villain who "just doesn't play well with others."

"He's just much more of a real person," said Kimble, who sees Hook as the alpha male who wants friends so badly that he tries to capture some.

Appearing in the role of Peter Pan is actress Brooke Stone who, in contrast to Kimble, is just beginning her career in musical theater. "Peter Pan" marks Stone's second Broadway tour. She toured with "Hairspray" last year.

"I love that it is very much just pure fun," said Stone, who calls Peter Pan a dream role.

"I saw Cathy Rigby do this role when I was 12," she said. "It's like a dream come true for me."

While the touring lifestyle is not something Stone forsees continuing for her as long as it has for Kimble, at the moment, she's enjoying it quite a bit.

"It's a lot of fun," said Stone, who added that "it's also tricky to manage what we fondly refer to as 'real life' " from the road.

Both Kimble and Stone agree that the cast for "Peter Pan" is one of the best they've worked with; and Kimble likens coming to see the show with having a home-cooked meal.

"Our production has an incredible amount of heart," Kimble said. "It's like a big family rolling down the road."

And since he's never visited Helena, Sunday's performance will mean one more pin for Kimble's mother's map.

Tickets to "Peter Pan" are $39 for adults and $19 for children and students. Go to www.liveatthecivic.org or call 227-6588.
