Q. There is still snow on the ground but I want to start decorating for spring.
How can I brighten up my décor for spring without totally redecorating?
A. We can enjoy spring a few weeks early by bringing some of the outdoors in and creating a fresh new look. Here are some tips that will help you move to bright and light.
1. Let in the light
If you have heavy draperies and sheers, remove the heavy drapes leaving just the sheers. This will create a light airy feeling in the room. Consider replacing any dark colored or heavy curtains with a lighter fabric and color for a spring time look. Replace any old, dark lamp shades with new ones. Shades in white or cream will cast a brighter glow in the room.
2. Lighten up with fabric
Put away those cozy afghans and throws. If your sofa is covered in a dark or heavy fabric such as velvet, you might want to try a slipcover. They are relatively inexpensive and can create a dramatic change. Choose one that is a neutral color made of cotton or linen. Changing your throw pillows to ones that have brighter colors and floral prints is quick and easy. Don't forget your floorcoverings. Lightweight area rugs in sisal can replace heavy Persian rugs. In the bathroom set out white towels to give it that spa feel. In the bedroom, change your bedding to crisp white sheets and a lightweight blanket.
3. Bring in some color
The easiest way to bring the outdoors in is to infuse the space with some bright color. Add a little yellow, bright green or cool blue. Look at your accessories in the room and see which ones seem wintry. Exchange those for ones that say springtime. Replace the basket filled with pine cones with a live plant. Place some fresh flowers in the center of the table. A bowl of lemons and limes will give any room a punch of color. A small water fountain will help create the mood of freshness. Even your artwork can be changed. Replace winter scenes with flowers, birds and other spring themes. Dark candles can be replaced with light or bright colors. Use vases and bowls in bright colors.
4. Dress up your fireplace
Clean out your fireplace and place a decorative screen in front of it. A wooden one that is painted will hide the black hole for the summer and becomes a real focal point. A grouping of plants on the hearth will add to the springtime feel.
5. Spruce up your front porch
The best way to welcome spring is through your front door. Start by cleaning off the winter debris and remove any remains of flowers from the previous year. Since it is too early for potted flowers, hang a wreath made of artificial flowers on your front door. Give your front door a fresh coat of paint. Replace your welcome mat with a light colored straw one.
