Weekly Rides
The Helena Bicycle Club offers weekly mountain bike rides on Monday, weekly road rides on Tuesday and Thursday, and various rides on the weekend. To find out more, log on to www.helenabicycleclub.org.
Trolley to Trails
The trolley to the Mount Helena Ridge Trail picks up hikers and bikers at the Woman's Mural on Broadway and Last Chance Gulch at 8 a.m., 8:40 a.m., and 9:20 a.m. Saturday and goes to the top of Grizzly Gulch. The ride is free but donations are appreciated.
Weekly Hikes
Join the Helena Outdoors Club on Tuesday evenings at 5:30 in the Park Avenue parking lot near the library for weekly hikes on Mount Helena and the South Hills. Call 449-7971.
Weekly bird walks
Birds & Beasley's will lead bird walks every Saturday at 7:30 a.m. The two-hour walks will vary each week. Call 449-0904.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Outdoors Woman
On July 31, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will host its 16th annual ";Becoming an Outdoors-Woman" workshop at the Birch Creek Center near Dillon. The workshop offers opportunities to build a survival shelter, cast a fly rod, use a map and compass, learn to shoot a rifle and cook a Dutch-oven treat. New this year are classes on rowing a raft, nature journaling, knot tying and designing a native garden. Classes are $200 and run through August 31. Call 444-2615.
Walleye benefit
On Aug. 1, Walleyes Forever and Montana Pike Masters will sponsor the third annual Camp Make-A-Dream Walleye Benefit at the Silos on Canyon Ferry Reservoir. A rules meeting and barbecue take place at 7 p.m. on July 31. Fees are $60 per boat. Prizes for the biggest walleye per boat are $500 for first, $350 for second, $250 for third and $150 for fourth. Gun demos
On Aug. 1, Bob Wards will host its annual Shooter's Demo Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Deer Creek Gun Range in East Missoula. A similar event will be held in Butte on Aug. 2 at the Rocker Gun Range. The demo is a free for rifle, shotgun and handgun enthusiasts. Call 406-728-3220.
Crow elder
On Aug. 1, Barney Old Coyote will present ";River Stories of the Crows" at 7 p.m. at the Missouri Headwaters State Park. Old Coyote will talk about Crow Indian stories of the supernatural and historical, and he will discuss the river as a natural boundary against enemies and as a trading place with other tribes and non-Indians. Bow Hunters
On Aug. 2, the Lewis and Clark Archers will host their Bow Hunters Rendezvous and 3D target shoot at the Z Bar Z Sporting Clays off Birdseye Road from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Moonlight Hike
On Aug. 4, the Montana Discovery Foundation will host a moonlight hike near Kading Campground on the Little Blackfoot River. Participants should meet at 6:45 at the campground and be on the trail until around 9 p.m. Call 495-3711.
Girl Scout rafting
On Aug. 4, the Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming will host a Missouri River rafting trip for girls grades 4 and up from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All gear will be provided and professional instructors will guide the way. Cost is $22 and $27 for non-Girl Scouts. Call 800-736-5243.
Charter Oak tours
On Aug. 8, the Montana Discovery Foundation and the Helena National Forest will offer tours of the Charter Oak Mine. Terry Beaver will lead the tours between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Call 495-3711.
Divide Trail
On Aug. 8 and 9, the Prickly Pear Land Trust will lead the High Divide Trails Jam, completing a trail along the Continental Divide. Teams will complete the final two miles of a 7.4 mile section of the scenic trail between Helena and Butte in the Electric Peak Roadless Area. Call 442-0490.
Dive fest
On Aug. 14, divers will converge at Yacht Basin for the Montana State Dive Fest. Divers and those interested in the three-day event should call 439-9566 or 442-4334.
Gear Swap
On Aug. 15, Youth Connections will host its first Gear Swap from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Vigilante Stadium. Anyone interested in sponsoring the event, purchasing a table to sell gear or donating gear should call 324-1032.
All about York
On Aug. 22, the York Volunteer Fire Department will host the annual and ever-popular York 38 Special, York Spirit of 76, and the York Special 13 mountain bike ride though the Big Belt Mountains. Log on to www.york38special.com
Mule Deer party
On Aug. 29, the Lewis and Clark Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation is planning its annual fundraising banquet at the Red Lion Colonial Hotel. A live and silent auction, gun raffles and games are planned. Help raise money to sustain mule deer and their habitat. Call 461-2844.
Bike race
On Aug. 29, Conoco-Phillips will host the annual UPS Bike MS Tour. The two-day, 145-mile journey runs from Billings to Red Lodge. The route has rest stops every 12 miles with support and gear vehicles along for the ride. Call 252-5927.
