Crews from Baxendale, Birdseye, Marysville, West Vally and East Valley fire departments along with the DNRC responded shortly after noon Saturday to a grass fire on Iron Ridge Loop off of Austin Road west of Helena.
"We got a report that a young boy, a 7-year-old boy, was playing with matches or a lighter near his house and started the fire," said Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Cheryl Liedle.
Liedle said the boy's father tried to get ahead of the fire but couldn't, prompting the rescue call. The fire burned approximately two acres.
Liedle said no structures were destroyed, but the fire did claim a Jeep Cherokee belonging to the family.
